Livingstone is a beautiful, rural town in southern Zambia just a stone’s throw away from the mighty Zambezi river and the border of Zimbabwe. It is a hub for visitors looking to experience one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – Victoria Falls, locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the Smoke that Thunders’. Livingstone is the ultimate playground for adventure-seekers, wildlife enthusiasts, and lovers of the great outdoors. Whether you’d like to bungee jump, swim in the ‘Devil’s Pool’, white water raft down the Zambezi, join a river safari or enjoy an African sunset, every experience in Livingstone is unique. The town itself is relaxed and friendly with an intriguing culture and history. Here, you’ll find arts and craft producers, museums, colonial architecture, traditional village life, as well as delicious local food and laidback African lifestyle.
Volunteers have the opportunity to observe patient care being provided by local staff in several Livingstone clinics, which provides valuable insight into the public healthcare system in Zambia. With the clinics having limited medical equipment, under-staffed, and overrun with patients, the assistance provided by volunteers is invaluable. Help with tasks such as taking basic vitals and allow staff to treat the large number of patients quicker. The clinics have several departments that you may be involved in, including outpatients for adults and children, HIV and TB services, as well as the pharmacy and maternity departments.
Be part of the bigger picture and contribute to health talks at local schools, training centers, and support groups by discussing relevant health issues. Facilitate workshops with community members on topics such as living positively with HIV, nutrition, cervical cancer, and women’s health. This form of education is vital as it provides individuals with the knowledge and ability to make healthy lifestyle choices within the context of their environment. Sharing knowledge is very powerful and the presence of volunteers is key in motivating community members.
The unique part of our Livingstone projects is that you can choose from a range of fun, engaging afternoon activities. Whether you’re playing to your strengths, broadening your knowledge, or just trying to step out of your comfort zone, you will get to work with a range of different community members on development projects and make an even greater impact on the ground.
Each afternoon you could be involved in Math Club, Reading Club, After-School Care, Adult Literacy Class, Art Club, environmental initiatives, or even some building activities.
“I had a great time being able to deliver care to people who need it most in rural Zambia. Home-based care is an effective way to provide the most basic needs that cannot be met otherwise. I also enjoyed the additional projects that involved teaching and playing sports. They were a pleasure.”
“Volunteering with African Impact frequently pushes you outside of your comfort zone and that is the best part about it. People from all different walks of life congregate here and work for a common goal, which is really something special. The work I’ve done here as a medical volunteer has been meaningful and that’s why I’ve come here twice, there really is no better way to make an immediate impact on a great community than volunteering here. Lastly, the staff of African Impact is incredible from top to bottom and they really create a fantastic family atmosphere.”
“Great, would recommend again. there are great staff, very friendly. they really immerse you into the culture and provide a great Zambian experience. There are many activities to choose from and you really feel like you are making a difference in the lives of those here.”
Once you have submitted your application, a Destination Manager will be in-touch to discuss the project with you.
