Cultural Immersion and Social Development, South Africa

Empathy is a key ingredient for bringing positive, sustainable change to people’s lives, so develop this by walking a mile in someone else’s shoes on this home-stay volunteering experience in Cape Town. Utilize your passion and skills and find meaningful ways of making a social impact within the community.

AS A VOLUNTEER, YOU'LL GET TO:

  • Contribute to the development of a township in Cape Town who we have worked with for over 8 years, Red Hill
  • Spend 1 night a week living with a local family, fully supported by the African Impact team
  • Be immersed daily in the local community and contribute to skills development initiatives, including job-readiness workshops, support groups, fitness classes, and more
  • Impact the lives of disadvantaged children by providing a helping hand at community preschools
  • Help our team run educational and after-school programs at a foster care home and community facility for children living in poverty
  • Be challenged while gaining new perspective and insight into what life is like for many people in South Africa
  • During your free time, explore one of the most beautiful cities in the world while remaining grounded and mindful of the very experiences not enjoyed by all

About the Destination

Cape Town

Cape Town is an internationally renowned destination and has something for everyone. The Mother City (as it’s known to locals) is home to Table Mountain, Robben Island, beautiful beaches, stunning vineyards, and incredible scenic drives. It’s been named the number 1 food city on the planet and regularly makes the top lists for most beautiful city in the world.  It’s also packed with adventure activities, such as skydiving and surfing.

Host Family Accommodation

Once a week, you will get the unique opportunity to stay over with 1 of the families living in the informal Red Hill settlement. The majority of homes in Red Hill are simple shacks, but are still very safe and homely. While it may be a challenging and eye-opening experience, the host families and surrounding neighbors are very welcoming to our volunteers as we have been working with these community members for over 8 years.

Volunteer Accommodation

From Friday to Thursday, you’ll live in a shared volunteer and intern house in Muizenberg, just 3 minutes from one of the most popular beaches in Cape Town. Aside from being one of the best surfing beaches around, it’s an area filled with vibey bars, cafes, and amazing restaurants. Our team of international and local staff members live and work with you, so expect to see and do more than most tourists could ever dream of.

Volunteer Reviews

“I had a great experience volunteering with African Impact in Cape Town. The program staff did a fantastic job of making me feel welcome, and engaging volunteers in meaningful projects. We were able to see how our volunteering fit into a bigger picture of community development. I enjoyed meeting volunteers from all over the world, and getting to volunteer in a meaningful and personalized way.”

“My home stay experience in Red Hill was incredible. I have experienced how welcoming South African people can be, but the home stay puts that into perspective even more so. My host mom Caroline kept introducing me as her sister, and would tell guests to speak in English so I could understand the conversation even when they were not talking to me. Overall it was one of the best experiences I have had.”
