“Mostly I enjoyed teaching english to students who seemed so eager to learn and be able to sponser children to go to school that weren't able to go because of financial difficulties.”
Veronica Montemarano (46), usa

“I loved working with the children at the nursery. I think it was a great idea placing people with one class as I got to know them a lot quicker and easier. Painting the school was one of my favorite things as well, as people walking past can see how much of a difference we were making. We turned a drab grey wall into a bright colourful picture in less than 2 weeks. My main highlight was being able to sponsor a girl to go to school. I wasn’t sure if we would be able to do this, and as class 1 already had 22 children in it, I thought it was even more un likely to happen. I was over the moon when the girls mum said yes, and I am also hoping to sponsor a boy here if his parents agree to it. All the staff I met during my time in Zanzibar were amazing, and they made my stay much more enjoyable. I also found the ride on the Dala Dala quite entertaining, and don’t think people should leave without having been on one  ”

Zanzibar Island is part of a beautiful tropical archipelago of islands and its capital, Zanzibar Town (known to many merely as Stone Town), is a fascinating place, with an intriguing blend of Indian, Arab, and African influences. With easy access to Tanzania's mainland and safari opportunities, our project base is on the east coast of the island in a long village set on a pristine stretch of coastline. More about the Volunteer Teaching & Community Project, Zanzibar, Tanzania in Tanzania

    Volunteer involvement in local Pre-schools
There are 4 pre-schools in Jambiani. Volunteers support the local teachers in educating the local children. TEFL Graduate Volunteers are most welcome!
    They get involved in:
    • Teaching English to children, teachers and local adults (This is where a TEFL qualification comes in handy, although it isn't an absolute must).
    • Singing and dancing with children in English and local languages.
    • Developing the children’s creative skills through crafts such as painting, drawing and colouring.
    • Playing developmental games with the children .
    • General upkeep of the school to keep it a pleasant environment in which to learn.

Volunteer Involvement in Primary and Secondary schools
Working in the primary and secondary schools, with too many children to accommodate at one time, and shortages of staff and facilities, often two school sessions are run per day. You will find that most of the schools have meagre and ill-equipped facilities, but a wealth of children with a desire to learn. Here a TEFL qualification would be really useful for your volunteer project.
These are the ways in which you will assist in the schools:
    • Teach English in the classes
    • Arrange for and conduct extra English classes before / after classes for scholars & teachers
    • Assist teachers in the science faculties (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology)
    • Teach teachers & scholars in basic computer skills
    • Organise and coordinate sport afternoons with the scholars
    • Help maintain and even re-build the schools’ facilities, most of which are quite run down

Volunteer involvement in the local Tourism Training Centre
In general tourism is considered to be the sector of activity with the most potential in Zanzibar. There is a drive through the tourism sector to deal with the issues of poverty reduction, education, youth, gender and the environment amongst others. Volunteers get involved in multiple areas to help with the training of these aspirants:
    • Teaching English
    • Life-skills teaching
    • Training students in basic administrative tasks
    • Training students in basic computer skills e.g. CV writing
    • Assist and supervise students in cooking classes and food & beverage management
    • Assist and supervise students in practical classes (‘role-play’, handling money, etc)

As we believe that community work is so closely linked to conservation work, we also focus some of our time on local conservation initiatives, such as tree-planting, beach clean-ups and other exciting interactive activities.

From April 2008 to May 2009 African Impact volunteers contributed over 5850 hours to community development in the Jambiani community in Zanzibar. Our project structures, together with the support and advice of our charitable foundation team at The Happy Africa Foundation, are continuously assessing our work and project strategies to ensure that these hours are meaningful with measurable outcomes.

For the same period, we painted the inside and outside of the Sirijati Nursery School as well as redo the floor and posters inside the classrooms. We also developed the gardens and put fences around all the trees at Ibrahim Milaat Nursery School, as well as varnishing all their doors. Our volunteers have also helped to teach English and computer keyboarding skills to the students at the Local Training Institute in Jambiani.

Volunteer Teaching & Community Project, Zanzibar, Tanzania, Tanzania, Zanzibar Island - Highlights

This volunteer project in Africa includes: Stone Town - Teach English - Rural Education & Development, Jambiani

"The project has honestly been amazing. I have been traveling in the past and it didn’t compare to the time I've had here. Every day has been different and exciting and the project offers a great view of local life and you really feel like you are helping and achieving major goals. I gained some great experience in teaching and learnt new skills with afternoon activities. African Impact has been so great to us and compared to what I’ve heard from other projects, it sounds like we’ve achieved much more here. I would definitely use African Impact again."
    Emma Farmar, Age 21, UK
