How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Community immersion

Cultural Immersion

Volunteers also get the unique opportunity to travel to the home of our Maasai students, located in West Kilimanjaro. Experience living in a rural Maasai village as you camp under the stars in the heart of the community in one of the most remote and stunning locations you could dream off! You will learn everything about the traditional livelihoods of the Maasai – their houses, food, way of life and culture. Sit around the campfire at night after tucking into a traditional meal whilst listening to Maasai stories and finish up by enjoying a magical sunrise over Kilimanjaro.

Maasai literacy program

Maasai Literacy Program

Due to a number of reasons, many Maasai children have not had the opportunity to attend school. As a result, many adults cannot read or write. This literacy program seeks to overcome this challenge by teaching Maasai adults to read and write in Swahili, as well as some basic English language instruction. Lessons are active and include many games and activities to ensure students are engaged. The impact of this project is immediate – seeing an adult write his name for the first time in his life, or watching someone read a full sentence for the first time, is a direct result of volunteer’s hard work.

Foundation english class

Foundation English Class

We’ve had a number of students graduate from our literacy program and are now capable of reading and writing in Swahili, the local language. Once students have completed the literacy program, they progress further to learning English in our Foundation English class. Volunteers teach students English foundations, including alphabet sounds, sentence structure and key vocabulary. This class gives students a strong base in the English language, which can open up more employment opportunities in the future.

Maasai youth empowerment club

Maasai Youth Empowerment Club

Unfortunately, many Maasai girls are still at risk of female genital circumcision and forced marriage in Tanzania. At certain times of the year when girls are on school holidays, volunteers work with a shelter for these vulnerable girls, running a variety of education and empowerment programs with them. Volunteers work alongside our project staff to run workshops on subjects including health, confidence-building and decision-making.

Wildlife Safaris

Tanzania is home to some of the world's most famous national parks, perfect for spotting the Big 5 of African wildlife. One of the highlights of an African safari is to experience the annual migration of an estimated two million wildebeest (joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra and Thomson's gazelles) across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

You can view this spectacular seasonal event by land, air or both!

Hiking and camping trails

Hiking and Camping Trails

A popular reason for many international visitors to Tanzania is the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro, which stands at a whopping 5895 meters. For the very fit and brave at heart you can embark on a journey to the peak of Africa. There are also Kilimanjaro Day Hikes for those who may be short of time and just want to get a taste of the climb.

You won't reach the peak but will climb to the first camp at 2720 meters. Hot spring camping trips are also a big adventure at Lake Chala where you can go camping beside some natural hot springs or at the lake shores.

Moshi, Tanzania

About the Destination

Mt Kilimanjaro is one of the most iconic attractions in the whole of Africa, the Continent’s highest peak. Nestling at its base is the busy tourist town of Moshi; a bustling network of food markets and restaurants, where one can’t escape the ‘catchy’ Swahili music of the locals… and don’t forget the goats who will regularly stop the traffic!

As well as being in awe of the different colors, smells and sounds in Moshi, you can’t help but notice the incredible variety of cultures and specifically that of the Maasai people, colorfully dressed in their traditional ‘Warrior’ clothing and brandishing some of the most impressive jewelry. The Maasai are gentle people who live very traditional lives. You will get the life-changing opportunity to spend time with these tribes, dancing, drumming, tasting their food and begin to understand the vibrant culture of these unique people.

Living just a short drive away from Moshi, you will spend your time volunteering in the rural village of Mdawi, in an exclusive fully furnished volunteer house with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy nights spent under the stars (and trust me, you’ve never seen so many!) and opportunities for you to interact with and bond with the local villagers.

As well as hosting some of the friendliest and welcoming people in Africa, you can’t come to Tanzania and not experience its other locals… the wildlife. With monkeys in the trees and lizards sunning themselves on the rocks in your garden, living here is a perfect balance between integrating with the Tanzanians and enjoying the spectacular nature this unforgettable country offers. Why not catch the Great Wildebeest Migration at the world-famous Serengeti Park? Or see herd after herd of wild elephants from a hot air balloon drifting along the plains?

If it’s even greater adventures you’re after, how about trekking up Kilimanjaro? We can assure you after volunteering in its awesome shadow it will definitely be on your mind!

Feedback from our volunteers

Thomas Reid, USA

It is quite difficult to capture in words just how special my month volunteering with African Impact in Moshi was. An organization who went at their work not with sympathy and a coin purse, but impassioned understanding, respect, and a belief in education. A land which transcended my ideas about nature and beauty and which everyday was a sacred communion of life.

A people who made a dark and faraway place feel like home, and who called me brother, teacher, friend. In my short month, I helped young Maasai warriors learn basic Swahili phonics, learn to read and write their own names. I taught nursery children the parts of the human body in English. "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" suddenly had a wonderful sense of meaning!!

The point is, tangible change can often be hard to come by, but this organization equipped me with the tools to do just that. I would highly recommend teaching in Moshi with African Impact, if not for the life altering, preconception eradicating, breathtaking beyond words experience, then at least for the tasty breakfast bananas.

Chelsea Edwards, UK

Best experience of my life :) This project is extremely well organised by the African Impact staff who make you feel safe and supported throughout your whole volunteer experience. One of the nicest aspects of this project is that the work you do is very respected and appreciated so the community welcomes you with open arms allowing you to make lots of new friends with your students and other people you work with on the project.

Basically it's a beautifully inspiring project and I wish I could go back!
