Many children in the disadvantaged communities and townships of Cape Town have limited opportunity for sporting activities, necessary for physical development and important in learning social and life skills. Use your sporting skills and passion to change these kids’ lives and send them on to a better future.

Sport4

African Impact volunteer projects in Cape Town are focused amongst communities which are poverty stricken and affected by low rates of employment, insufficient access to water and sanitation,as well as proper education and healthcare. Substance and alcohol use, linking to behaviours of physical, emotional and sexual abuse are also a major concern in these areas.

African Impact has developed meaningful programs with community partners where you can volunteer in Cape Town to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children, and empower youth through education, sports and life skills. Physical Education has been removed from many school curriculums in South Africa and as a result student involvement in physical activity has decreased.

Sport is a vital part of youth development and helps to increase concentration and develop social skills such as leadership, team work, and communication. There are a number of types of schools you could be placed in as a sports development volunteer, although volunteer work will take place mainly at community schools in the informal settlement areas of Cape Town.

Volunteers will also be involved in after-school care programs where you will help to plan and implement physical games to help the children with their motor skills and fitness levels. For some children this may be the only time of day where they engage in such activities therefore providing much needed development in this area.

It also provides a safe place for children to stay in the afternoons before their caregivers or parents return home from work. As a volunteer in Africa with your own unique set of skills and interests you will have the opportunity to design your own volunteer experience by combining a focus on sports with either orphan care, teaching, or healthcare.

Sports development

Sports Development

You will work alongside a trained sports coach in 45min sessions with different age groups teaching physical education classes. You will create innovative games and lesson plans, coach popular sports such as soccer and hockey, design drills and fitness tests to measure personal improvement and support some of the pre-schools by creating plans to encourage motor skills development for children aged 0-7 years.

Most of all you’ll be having a lot of fun and get to spend loads of time outdoors!

Teaching

Teaching

The focus of the Cape Town Teaching Project is to educate, support, and empower disadvantaged, orphaned, and vulnerable youth through education and fun activities and games. Teaching volunteer work includes assisting teachers with lesson planning, implementation and the daily school routine as well as providing one-on-one attention to students.

You may also be involved in homework support, craft-making, computer literacy and reading clubs in after-school care programs.

Orphans vulnerable children

Orphans & Vulnerable Children

A home was established in Khayelitsha township to care for abandoned and orphaned children aged between 0 and 8 years. This area of Cape Town has been hugely affected by HIV/AIDS.

The ultimate goal of the home is to place children with a foster family after nursing them back to health. At this volunteer community project you will give children one-on-one attention, engaging in fun activities to help the children with their basic development needs. Topics covered include social play, language, numeracy and rhythm.

Healthcare

Healthcare

The home for orphaned and abandoned children also requires your assistance as a healthcare volunteer. As a volunteer you will assist the home’s nurse every Monday to Friday with full health checks and keeping medical records updated. You will also need to support the health assistance when medical attention is required.

Volunteering in healthcare can be very rewarding and will allow you to gain practical work experience.

Feedback from our volunteers
Mollie Robbie, UK

South Africa has been the best experience ever - African Impact has been life-changing! Sports volunteering was brilliant. The kids were a pleasure to coach, and welcomed me with open arms. The coaches at the schools are doing a great job and I will miss them all greatly! I came to South Africa alone and was very nervous, but everyone did a fantastic job of making me feel this was my home. I'm leaving here feeling more than content and with a completely different outlook on life.

Matthew Blatherwick

This experience has shown me a different style and culture of coaching children and has opened my eyes to the fact that children have a massive respect for adults in this culture and been constantly hearing a collective "yes coach" and if you say something they do it, whereas some English children don't have that level of respect of even close. The more you put in to project the more you get out, it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.
