Contribute to the conservation of cheetahs as you work with a local breeding facility in beautiful South Africa, interacting with cheetah of all ages and preparing individuals for release back into the wild. The Cheetah Breeding and Re-introduction Center is based near Parys in South Africa, about 160 miles south of Johannesburg. The center is rolling out a three-phase program to restore cheetahs back into the wild. This is the first cheetah project of its kind in the world and it provides a unique experience for conservation volunteers in Africa. A new and improved small cat enclosure is also being built for the servals and caracals at the project. You will be working side by side with the staff, and will find their knowledge and expertise invaluable during your stay! If you’re passionate about the conservation of Africa’s big cats, this is the perfect volunteer project for you.

P1000352 copy

As a volunteer, you’ll get to:

  • Interact with cheetahs on a daily basis during “cheetah time” every afternoon.
  • Participate in the first two of the three phases of the re-introduction process: hand-raising cheetah cubs to teach them to hunt; and moving individual cheetahs into a large, secure, fenced area with prey species so they can hunt for themselves, where you will monitor them closely. The cheetah are then moved into new game reserves where they can live in the wild with no human interaction.
  • Be responsible for cleaning and maintaining cheetah enclosures.
  • Exercise and feed the cheetahs.
  • Monitor cheetah cubs that are born in the enclosures.
  • Learn all about the behavior of cheetahs and other African big cats, and gain a deeper understanding of what conservation means.

How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Phase 1 involvement interaction with cheetah and physical labour

Phase 1 Involvement: Interaction with Cheetah and Physical Labour

As a wildlife volunteer in Africa, your involvement in the first phase of cheetah rehabilitation will include enclosure maintenance and cleaning, preparing meat, cleaning the cheetah kitchen, feeding the cheetahs as well as exercising them and training them to hunt by associating running and chasing with meat.

You will also help to monitor and interact with cubs over the age of three months, and will do tasks that help with cheetah enrichment and stimulation. A large part of looking after the cheetahs also involves caring for, maintaining and preparing their living environment.

This kind of physical labor can include the removal of alien plant species, general reserve maintenance, creating fire breaks around the cheetah camps and preparing the land for Phase 2 by clearing the overgrown plants, removing rubbish and fencing – so be prepared to get your hands dirty!

Phase 2 involvement

Phase 2 Involvement

There is no interaction with the cheetahs in this phase, as they need to become independent and able to raise their cubs in an environment free of humans.

Your volunteer work in the second phase of re-introduction will include monitoring the cheetahs to ensure that they are feeding and healthy; maintaining levels of prey and removing old carcasses; and organizing and monitoring the breeding of cheetahs and the rearing of cubs.

Their living environment also needs to be checked regularly for any fence damage or holes, snares or other danger.
