How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Research

Research

You will gather valuable information on wild animals by monitoring their behaviour and movements in the field. You will collect environmental and related data to give a cohesive and full analysis from which we identify correlations and patterns to help assist reserve and animal management. This gives wildlife foundations and ecological teams a multitude of essential data, inclusive of (but not limited to) population numbers, social dynamics and carrion capacity in any given area. You’ll also learn how to compile animal ID kits which help us and partner organisations to monitor and track both individuals and family/social groups. All data goes toward fine-tuning management plans of animals and habitats supporting future conservation initiatives and the preservation of the African Big 5.

Physical conservation work

Physical Conservation Work

Physical conservation activities during your volunteering placement will take place on various reserves in the area and will consist of camera trapping, removing alien plant species, clearing encroaching bush, maintaining waterholes and picking up litter, to mention but a few. It is a fantastic opportunity to bond with other volunteers – and keep in good shape!

Project work

Project Work

This is an opportunity to work on the data collected whilst out in the field and any other project requirements at the time. In the research lab you will help enter the data, which will contribute to animal ID kits, guides for tracking; compiling mini animal guides, sightings data and game count reports. This work helps reserve management to sustain a healthy ecosystem on the reserve and to understand the behaviour of the animals, all which contributes to the preservation of the African Big 5.

Feedback from our volunteers

Stephanie Schaefer, America

"It's changed everything. It has made me want to travel more and come back to Africa. I thought I had my whole life figured out but this showed me that there is so much more that I can do. I've met amazing people from all over the world that I want to see again, and I'm a much more confident, adventurous, and positive person."

Danielle Contrada, USA

"My time with African impact has been an unforgettable experience. Being heavily involved in research and being able to see wildlife up close has been an absolute dream come true!"

Brian Marnoch, UK

"I came on this project with no expectations, only with the open mind and positive attitude as listed in the pre-booking details. Whilst on drives and Klaserie trips I never at any stage had concern for my safety and was entirely comfortable in the knowledge and experience of all the staff and guides. I cannot explain how fully satisfied and fulfilled I now feel having taken the step to come on my first volunteering trip and would fully recommend A.I. to anyone thinking about this sort of break."

Alex Dibnah, UK

"From drives and data collection, to hacking away at bamboo with machetes in a crocodile enclosure or sicklebush; from endless hours of project work to camping out in a big five game reserve, there really is an endless list of things to do here and surrounded by such amazing people in one of the most amazing and beautiful countries in the world, volunteering with African Impact is the definition of the clichéd phrase "experience of a lifetime"."
