Offer your teaching assistance to vulnerable children in the Limuru community in Kenya, many of whom are orphaned, affected by HIV/AIDS, and developmentally challenged. Your extra special care and attention will help promote their development in under-staffed, impoverished schools.
Limuru is a town located on the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley about 35 kilometers, by road, northwest of Nairobi, the capital, and the largest city in Kenya. It is fairly small with a population of only about 5000 people. Limuru is widely known in Kenya as a tea-producing and -processing zone. The tea plantations established around Limuru from 1903 onwards were the foundation of Kenya’s largest export industry, which produces some of the world’s highest quality tea.
Venture out of town and you will find the great Maasai Mara and some of Africa’s best beaches. Over weekends, you can explore these sublime landscapes, get up close to Africa’s iconic wildlife, and meet Maasai warriors. You can also visit the rock that inspired Pride Rock in The Lion King.
Assist a teacher at a local school in developing new teaching material by combining your fresh, international ideas with the teacher’s classroom knowledge. This will involve implementing stimulating ideas in learning, aimed at promoting active participation and an in-depth understanding of schoolwork and not merely learning through repetition. Further to this, you will help children who are falling behind in class by providing vital one-to-one attention that they otherwise would not be able to achieve.
It is easy for children to fall behind in their schoolwork when the classes are too large. Your volunteer opportunities may include taking groups of children out of the classroom environment to go through the classwork at a slower rate and with more guidance and one-on-one attention. African Impact volunteers can take part in revision activities after class and during break times to help children understand their schoolwork.
During the afternoon, you will get to assist at reading clubs. These clubs assist small groups of children with their reading and literacy skills outside the formal classroom environment.
Every Friday, you will offer a huge helping hand to a local facility that cares for a variety of children who really need your help, support, care, and most of all, some fun in their lives. You can get involved in activities such as caring for the younger babies, teaching, or playing sports and outdoor activities with the older children.
“The last few weeks I have been on the teaching project in Limuru. African Impact was a great support and I had a very special time at Hope School. I will take this experience with me for the rest of my life. Thanks for making it happen African Impact!”
“I think it has changed pretty much all my perspectives in life. But it has been a real eye-opener to see how and what it means to be in the midst of poverty and actually experiencing to be with these people and hearing and observing what issues and consequences poverty has. I am definitely feeling lucky living in Denmark and this whole experience has made me appreciate and value even the smallest thing!”
Once you have submitted your application, a Destination Manager will be in-touch to discuss the project with you.
