“The difference between a broken community and a thriving one is the presence of women who are valued.” – Michelle Obama
Our gender equality projects strive to empower and inspire women and girls across Africa, providing them with a sense of self-worth and pride. The best way we achieve this is through the power of education.
Educating women will, ultimately, allow them to live more informed and safer lives. For example, in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 31 mothers will die during childbirth. In developed regions, it’s only 1 in 4,300. These numbers reflect and demonstrate the difference between the levels of education available to them. Increased education efforts discourage early pregnancy and decrease the risks associated with it. With education, the scale of these issues will significantly decrease.
If all women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa were provided with a quality education:
Primary Education | Secondary Education
Early Pregnancy | 60% fewer girls would become pregnant under the age of 17 years.
Malnutrition | 1.7 million children would be saved from malnutrition. | 12 million children would be saved from malnutrition. |
Death in Child Birth | Would reduce by 70% – 500,000 lives would be saved.
Child Marriages | 14% fewer child marriages | 2/3 fewer child marriages |
The effects of primary and secondary education for women and girls
It is evident just how important education is for women. Women who are able to access a quality education are more likely to be presented with choice, opportunity, and prosperity.
As a volunteer, you will join one of our girl empowerment projects in Zambia or Tanzania, and contribute to our Girl Impact initiative. This initiative was set up to support and educate young girls to help them make better-informed decisions as they move towards womanhood, provide educational workshops, and encourage income-generating activities. By volunteering on one of these projects, you will educate and inspire the women and girls we work with across Africa, teaching them the importance of:
Most importantly, volunteers help these girls and women find their own voice, uplifting them, and empowering them to make more informed choices. By supporting our initiative, you make a significant difference in the lives of young girls and women across Africa, helping them realise their potential and inspiring them to achieve their dreams.
