By applying for the online TEFL course and undertaking your practicum and teaching internship with us, you’ll teach young children as they start their education journey, work with teenagers who are transitioning into the next stage of their lives, and help adults from the Maasai Tribe who wanting to improve their employability by enhancing their knowledge of the English language. These TEFL practicum hours also allow you to gain first hand teaching experience with real students in an actual classroom setting.

Kiswahili (Swahili) is the national language of Tanzania, which means that young children are instructed in Kiswahili throughout primary school, but only encounter English when they reach high school. This results in secondary school students struggling to understand and engage critically with what they are being taught – exams and tests become a matter of regurgitating information, rather than a demonstration of real understanding. As a result, Tanzania’s national level of English proficiency is very low, and many adults (including those you will meet in Moshi) struggle to access job opportunities due to their poor literacy rate.
Moshi itself is a buzzing tourist town at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s small and friendly and everyone is extremely welcoming – you will feel at home in no time at all! You will encounter many of your students as you stroll around during your lunch break, after project or at the weekend. Moshi is packed with cafes, restaurants, bars and local amenities, as well as many hotel lodges with swimming pools where you can spend the weekend relaxing, all within walking distance or a short taxi journey from the volunteer house. It is also the hub to Tanzania’s best safari’s locations, like Kilimanjaro, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater National Parks.
You will be staying at our African Impact volunteer and intern house in the village of Mdawi, just six kilometres from Moshi town center. The accommodation is very safe and comfortable, with shared, en-suite bedrooms and hot showers. Enjoy the warm temperatures in the outside dining and lounge area – the perfect spot to kick back and relax, and plan lessons. All your meals will be freshly cooked by our excellent on-site chef. Our Project Coordinator lives on the premises and is always there to support you with everything you need. Offering guidance and advice, the staff will help you plan your day, and make sure you’re having fun the whole time you’re with us.
Kimochi Secondary began as a community school, with funds raised through the local Kimochi community in rural Moshi. The closest secondary school was sometimes over an hour’s walk away for students, so they started building basic classrooms. In 2015, the school was taken over by the government, teachers were recruited, and basic resources and curriculums were provided. In 2017, our partnership began and we solidified it in 2018 when our regular Girls and Boys Club started.
Our partnership with Shiners Nursey School (just 15 minutes walk from the African Impact volunteer house) started in 2015, with the hope to work with their two nursery classes. Since then, their adjacent church and surrounding veranda’s have become the home of our Community Classes and Womens’ groups. Every morning, we teach Kiswahili Literacy and English Language to adult community members, from beginner literacy right up to Advanced English. Following this, we teach our two nursery classes and host a Womens’ group. Through African Impact, every morning Shiners Nursery transforms into a busy Community Education Center.
