Orphaned and Vulnerable Children Support, Cape Town

Visit one of the world’s most iconic tourist destinations and play a vital role in enriching the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. A little care and support can go a long way and as a volunteer on this project you can use educational games and fun activities to help children and youth on their way to a brighter future.

Winner of the Outstanding Volunteer Project Award in the Global Youth Travel Awards 2014

AS A VOLUNTEER, YOU'LL GET TO:

  • Spend your mornings assisting at an Emergency Care Home for Abandoned and Orphaned Children, which was established to care for neglected children aged between 0 and 8 years and a variety of after-school care facilities for children aged 6 – 14, which provides a safe place for youth in the immediate hours after school.
  • Implement a fun plan of activities at the homes to help the children with their basic development needs, creativity, sociability, gross motor skills, language, numeracy and rhythm. You will plan and implement fun activities with which to achieve these goals and nurture and care for these abandoned children, where one-on-one attention is also essential for these children to develop into adults.
  • Choose from full time Orphaned and Vulnerable Children volunteering or combine this with another volunteer activity to broaden your volunteer experience, whether this be assisting in a healthcare programme, joining our gender empowerment project, sports development or teaching and youth development volunteering.
  • Explore the city of Cape Town with must-do activities like climbing up Table Mountain, visiting Robben Island or going shark cage diving!
  • Live and work in one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Volunteer Reviews

“Unforgettable and inspiring! African Impact changed my life in more ways than one. I was incredibly humbled and overwhelmed with my experience here. I was able to interact with orphaned and vulnerable children through play and educational activities. The atmosphere in the house and the town was great and the weekends were filled with fun activities”   Kacie Hay, USA

“I can’t begin to sum up my love for these people and this place. The African Impact team makes everyone feel at home. You take ownership of your projects through planning and the responsibility you are given makes you feel like you are carrying out an important role. You make an impact on the communities you work in but they make a larger impact on you.”  Katie Panagopoulas, USA

How your volunteer fee is used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

About the Destination

During your stay at the tip of Africa you will be located in Observatory – the city’s most bohemian suburb, a short 10 minute drive from the Cape Town city centre. The secure property is fully furnished and staffed with a cook and housekeeper. Volunteers in Cape Town share a room with 2-6 others and bathrooms are communal. Wifi is available for a small fee as well as access to a small lock-up safe for your valuable items.

In the summer months, from December to February days are lovely and hot. The winter months of June to August tend to be rather wet but there are some beautiful crisp sunny days in between.

Cape Town is a buzzing location for sports tours and festivals such as the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, Two Oceans Marathon, Jazz Music Festival and Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts. There are plenty of local markets to visit, especially on weekends, where you can enjoy mouth-watering home-made fare and shop for local crafts. You can visit heritage sites such as the Castle of Good Hope and maybe even spot whales and dolphins off the coast. As if that wasn’t enough, the Cape is also ‘wine country’ offering remarkable wine tours and magnificent scenery.

Craft breweries are also taking the Cape by storm and there are plenty of places to visit for some unique beer tasting experiences.

As you work and travel in Africa, the people of Cape Town will warm your heart, entertain you and you will discover great diversity in the different communities. Whether you are a student volunteer, coming for a gap year program or a well travelled individual, this volunteer opportunity in Africa promises to leave you a deeper, stronger individual ready for the next adventure.
