High School Group Volunteering - African Impact

High School Group Volunteering

Are you looking for a safe and interactive group volunteering trip to Africa for students at your school? Let us put together a unique, once-in-a-lifetime volunteer adventure for your High School group, which will see you learning, exploring and giving back to local communities and conservation efforts on a trip that is specifically designed for those aged 14-18 years old.

These trips provide the chance to volunteer in a safe environment that benefits the students and can provide academic or community service credit, all the while opening minds and broadening experiences. On all locations there will be time available for reflection and group activities outside of volunteering hours.

Programs will consist of education-based volunteering which will be supported with cultural experiences and travel. These trips can be custom-made to fit your requirements during either term-time or holidays and can vary in length. On all locations a 24-hour support team with dedicated staff will be available just for your group.

Possible Destinations

South Africa
  • St Lucia is located in South Africa and is part of a World Heritage Site. The prospect of working in rural village communities with children and entire families living in poverty ensures that there is a wide range of community development activities on offer in this friendly and welcoming part of South Africa. This destination is also perfect if a beach is high on your list of wishes as it sits on the beautiful warm Indian Ocean and is also a wildlife ‘hotspot’ with endless safari opportunities.
  • Greater Kruger National Park is iconic in South Africa for its wildlife. If getting close and personal to the Big 5 while learning research techniques and the importance of the environment is on your agenda, then look no further. Living in a lodge surrounded by wildlife, your group members will learn to understand the importance of wildlife, as well as being part of environnemental education programs in the local communities.
Zimbabwe and Zambia
  • Victoria Falls is on the border of Zimbabwe and overlooks one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. This location provides the option to interact with and be involved in lion conservation and research, as well as providing education to the local schools that rest on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river. Weekend activities include white water rafting, sunset cruises and lunches in nearby Victoria Falls town.
  • Livingstone is located next to the mighty Victoria Falls in Zambia, where you will regularly see sunsets over the Zambezi river. Working with the local communities and governments for over 9 years, we have a range of community projects here, from building and refurbishments, eco-friendly initiatives and community development activities which work with both vulnerable children and adults. We would be happy to create an itinerary which combines your needs with everything this unique location has to offer.
Tanzania

Zanzibar is a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Tanzania. Famed for its vibrant culture, pristine sandy beaches and beautiful blue waters, we work within a number of small fishing villages providing community development and educational activities that uplift the local people. Depending on your needs we can also accommodate groups interested in marine research activities and plan a number of exciting excursions during your free time.

Volunteer Reviews

“While most young people grew up picturing Africa through the eyes of Simba, Timon and Pumba, 12 students from CSU experienced “the real Africa” on a three-week service-learning trip to Livingstone, Zambia, this summer, where they got involved in two areas; community education and public health. This involved teaching in classrooms and after-school clubs, assisting rural medical clinics and getting involved in wider outreach initiatives, mostly health talks at clinics and schools which tackled pertinent issues such as HIV and AIDS, cervical cancer, safe sex, breast feeding and nutrition.

On weekends the students used their free time for excursions. These included a two-day safari tour of Chobe National Park, visiting a traditional African village exploring Victoria Falls and a “free Saturday” allowed the group to visit destinations outside of the itinerary. For many students this meant rafting and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River!”

“There’s a seismic shift that happens after really experiencing Africa for all that it is, which I think is the point of the whole program,” said one teacher. “It’s about enriching students in ways they cannot get in a classroom and allowing them to imagine possible futures for themselves.”
