“Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large” – United Nations
In Eastern and Southern Africa, societal norms notoriously favour boys over girls. Whether it is their right to access education or decide when and who they want to marry, millions of girls across the continent are profoundly impacted by this imbalance and the harmful effects of gender inequality. Millions of girls do not have control of their own bodies, futures, and lives.
As an intern on our empowerment programs, you will play a vital role in changing perceptions in communities marred by gender inequality and empowering girls and women to find their voices, pursue their dreams, and live the lives they deserve.
Whether you want to pursue a career in social work, community development, education, or human rights work, women’s empowerment programs provide valuable insight and experience, but also a chance to get involved with projects that are changing the face of African societies.
Internships in Africa offer truly life-changing experiences. You will immerse yourself in a community and witness how gender inequality has stolen childhoods and futures, but also get a chance to play an active role in the reversing its harmful effects and creating a more equal society.
You will work closely with girls, women, and other community members on various projects and initiatives that promote a more balanced society. You will spend most of your time engaged in activities, workshops, and discussions with girls and women from the community.
Hearing stories from people who have experienced the harmful effects of gender inequality will give you deeper insight into issues surrounding gender equality, but hearing their stories of strength and resilience will also inspire you and remind you why it is something worth fighting for.
As an intern, you will gain intimate knowledge of women’s rights issues in a country where gender-based violence is pervasive and you will play a major role in empowering girls and women and galvanizing communities to support a more equal society. Our empowerment programs are carefully designed around issues that are relevant to the local community and includes all members of the community, including boys and men.
Some of the ways you will contribute to female empowerment include:
Our programs are developed hand in hand with local communities and are carefully designed to support change where it is needed most. They are set up in areas where communities welcome the help to ensure you are contributing in a way that is responsible and sustainable.
