More about the Sports Coaching and Community Work in Zambia

Sports and Soccer Volunteers spend their time training, guiding and working with soccer teams in Livingstone community. We believe sport is an essential and effective tool to teach about various subjects such as HIV, Nutrition and a Healthy Lifestyle. You do not need to be qualified for our sports project, you just need the desire to impact!

Coaching the Coaches - A project set up in order to provide Livingstone with more coaches and improve the skills and knowledge of the leagues coaches. This sustainable project is successful as, as a volunteer, not only will you be able to leave your mark in Zambia, by leaving Livingstone knowing you have given someone a skill and an interest to improve themselves further, but they can continue with the knowledge you imparted coaching others. You will also learn a vast amount from the coaches about training and teaching and coaching in Zambia.

Training the Team - African Impact manages the training of an under 11s to under 16's team (U10 and U21) in Livingstone. This team has been established for a long time and has been trained by African Impact since 2008. This team is an all boys community team (we also have girls football and netball) – as we believe sport and soccer should be accessible to all individuals, even those who do not attend school. Our help within the team ensures regular faces are coaching the team, with international backgrounds for the players to gain a wide range of skills.

Teaching within Schools - As an African Impact volunteer, you will spend your mornings assisting in a community school classroom. While the teacher is in front of the class teaching, it is extremely valuable to have a teaching assistant who can go around and help individual children with their assignments. Since classes are usually very large, the pupils do not often get this individual attention, so any extra attention they receive is highly appreciated.

    HIV Education in sport-
As a volunteer you will spend one afternoon a week traveling to different community teams (there are more than 12 connected to African Impact) to hold an HIV in sport workshop. This will involve HIV relay games, team building games, question time and football matchs. By using your skills as a sports coach you have the chance to enlighten youths in HIV awarness. Particularly for the young boys; kinisthetic learning methods is a highly effective teaching technique and is something youths rarely receive at school.

Specialist Sports - Your schedule is set for you by the sports coordinating team, however, if you have any particular interests or skills you would like to use, we would love to accommodate it! The children at the schools are always keen to learn new activities – particularly if they come from overseas!! We can set up a class for you to teach tai kwon do, athletics, cricket, or whatever your interest is; we have been known to teach gymnastics to 5 year olds and yoga to 50 year olds!

Please Note: Swimming may be a difficult sport to coach in Livingstone.

    Involvement in Community Projects
You will be combining sports coaching with a variety of projects in the local community. This allows you to make a difference in other areas and not just through sport. You will be able to choose between the following projects:

    Reading Club
The reading clubs were set up in order to try to give children within community Schools individual attention to improve their general reading and English skills.

    Build and Paint Schools
Schools in Livingstone deal with a great shortage of classrooms, as a result of which most children do not receive the full day of class they need. With the help and guidance of professional builders, we are building new classrooms for as many schools as possible. As a volunteer, you will help with mixing cement, laying bricks, laying floors, plastering walls, and painting. It is hard, but highly rewarding work! In addition, we refurbish and paint existing classrooms.

    Home Based Care Project/Farming
The Maramba Home Based Care Project is run by a group of 30 local women who are all volunteers. The women spend each morning visiting patients in different 'zones' in the local community. The patients generally have HIV, TB and Malaria and often cannot afford to go the clinic or hospital. As well as bringing food and medical supplies, the patients are given advice on nutrition and the correct way to take their medication. The support group also sometimes cooks and cleans for patients who have no family. The women have their own land that they use to farm for the purpose of raising money for the project, which they then spend on food and medical supplies for the patients that they support and visit.
As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to join the women on their visits to patients in the community, and contribute to the help they offer. In addition, you will help the women out with the farming. Volunteers are involved in this programme from Mondays-Thursdays.
We also work with the Linda Home Based Care programme on Mondays and Thursdays.

HIV Education – Awareness Affects Everyone
Within the Zambian population, a minimum of one out of every six people are living with the HIV virus. Livingstone has one of the highest populations in Zambia of HIV-infected people.
The HIV Education course is run by African Impact volunteers and aims to significantly reduce new incidence of HIV in the community. It aims to encourage those who have not yet been tested to find out their HIV status and to provide information on available treatment options.

    Elephant Pepper Project
Please note that this project is seasonal.
The Elephant Pepper Development Trust is an organisation that aims to reduce the conflict between farmers and elephants. Particularly in the dry season, elephants raid people’s crops, which often causes farmers to lose their whole year’s income in one night. The elephants are often shot as a result. To save the lives of both people and elephants, the Elephant Pepper Trust has developed ways to use chilli pepper plants to keep elephants away from people’s land, as the animals don’t like the taste and smell of chilli. The project gives farmers free seedlings and explains to them how to use the peppers. Moreover, Elephant Pepper buys the surplus of the chilli peppers back from the farmers, which gives the farmers a good extra income. As a volunteer, you will be involved in the project by helping build green houses for the seedlings, setting up demonstration sites around town, and building shops where women can come and sell their peppers.

From April 2008 to May 2009 African Impact volunteers contributed over 35100 hours to community development on our volunteer projects in Livingstone – Medical, Teaching and Sports projects. Our project structures, together with the support and advice of our charitable foundation team at The Happy Africa Foundation, are continuously assessing our work and project strategies to ensure that these hours are meaningful with measurable outcomes.

Our volunteers are taking P.E. Lessons at Dambwa Christian Community school which the children are really enjoying. We have also been assisting with coaching teams at David Livingstone and Mwandi Community School. With our HIVES project, using games we make it easy to talk about issues like AIDS, HIV, sex and Contraception. Talking about these subjects, improves the knowledge on both advantages and disadvantages of sex and how someone can protect himself from sexually transmitted diseases like HIV.
