How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

The Zambezi and Victoria Falls National Parks in Zimbabwe are undoubtedly amongst the most impressive wildlife areas in Southern Africa and a dream location for any photography enthusiast. The Zambezi River stretches on for 40 kilometres with 56,200 hectares of Zambezi National Park to navigate. With four of the African Big 5 here, there are many opportunities for exceptional photographs. Animals include big-game such as elephant, buffalo, lion and antelope as well as an array of bird life, reptiles and creepy crawlies.

Photography

Photography

Work alongside our professional photographer who will arrange daily lessons and assignments to photographers. You will take full advantage of the Victoria Falls area through photo shoots of the Park’s diverse wildlife, Zambezi River, and magnificent African sunsets and sunrises. Assignments will involve photographing for use by our charity, ALERT, and may also be included in our African Impact Photography Database, which is filled with photographs used by non-profit organizations such as the WWF.

Conservation work

Conservation work

Part of your volunteer work will include hands on field research. You will go out on game drives, and often even walking safaris, learning about the animals and their habitat and also field skills such as tracking. You may even have the opportunity to camp at a water hole overnight with trained field guides.

Education

Education

Volunteer work opportunities may also include teaching local communities about the importance or wildlife and ecosystem conservation, thereby improving their knowledge and increasing sustainability of their surrounding environment.

About Victoria Falls

About victoria falls

About the Destination

Known as the Adventure Capital of Africa, Victoria Falls promises an exciting journey in work and play. You’ll stay at the Outpost Lodge, a private property for volunteers and staff, complete with a great dining area, pool and indoor and outdoor living spaces. Victoria Falls is a safe town with the most remarkable sunrises and sunsets, where you might catch a glimpse of wildlife even amongst the town's streets.

The national parks here are some of the best in Africa, and wildlife is easily spotted roaming around. The misty spray of the Falls creates a permanent drizzle and waters the surrounding vegetation, often forming beautiful rainbows. The Zambezi River is home to crocodiles, hippos, and diverse bird life and draws many animals, like elephants, to drink from its banks.

With so many activities and projects on offer, Victoria Falls is the perfect location for gap-year programs, university volunteering, high school programs and working holidays. You will learn about local cultures and traditions, history and even how to talk a little of the local language - Ndebele! People are incredibly friendly and hospitable and love to welcome you in sharing the beauty of their surroundings. You will never run out of things to learn, adventures to experience, people to help or animals to see, and the impact it will have on your life will be priceless.

Volunteer work in Africa, whether you are a student volunteering, on a gap year program or taking a volunteer working holiday, will change your life. You will return home with a renewed sense of peace, and a little piece stamped inside your heart.
