How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Horse management program

Horse Management Program

During your placement you will be involved in the daily running and management of the stable, which caters for horse-riding lessons, horse safaris, carriage safaris and the sports of polo and polocrosse. Most of your volunteer work will be riding orientated, such as schooling horses, guiding rides, fitness training, lessons and occasional wildlife management exercises on horseback.

You will also assist with hands-on work within the stable and the daily requirements of the organisation.

Lion conservation and rehabilitation

Lion Conservation

Your volunteer work with the lions will include walking the lions in the wild to familiarize them with their natural environment. You will also take care of them by providing water for the lions, maintaining and cleaning their enclosures and preparing their meat. Behaviour enrichment activities are also vital for the lions to develop into hunters and adapt to life in a wild environment.

Conservation education

Conservation Education

As part of your volunteer experience you may also be involved in some aspects of community work, especially at the ALERT Conservation Education Centre where you’ll teach rural kids about the importance of wildlife and environmental preservation.

Feedback from our volunteers

Jenna Studtmann, USA

This was truly the best experience of my life! Nothing will ever compare to my time at Antelope Park. Being surrounded by the animals and such wonderful people in the African bush was a complete dream. There is nothing in the world like a lion walk and watching the sunrise. I cannot express in words how great the program is for lions.

This amazing animal has a fighting chance to survive in the wild and to be a part of that made it that much better. I cannot wait to go back!

Sarah McAuley, Canada

This is something that will stay with me forever. I have learned how to not worry about small or material things as much and rather focus on making a difference and not to be overcome by small challenges in life but to look to the bigger picture and what can be done to improve a situation instead. It would be impossible to not feel passionate about this project.

It has a special place in my heart and I will be back!

Elise Bohman, 19, Sweden

‘It was very interesting and fun to come here and work with the lions, and of course to get to know lots of new people. I really liked it and all the staff members were very nice and friendly. I stayed for two weeks and it was definitely too short so if i get the chance to come back I wouldn't even hesitate a minute. Antelope park is an amazing place with amazing people!”

Mirjam Mulderij, Netherlands

The lion walk was the best thing. It was so special to walk with lions and to interact with them. I really believe in this project. I’ve seen the lions at stage 2 and the lions at night encounter and they really act like lions. Stage 2 proves that you can raise cubs by humans and let them live on their own.
