Leave your mark as you play a vital role in the conservation of Africa’s most iconic predator: The Lion. Walk with young lions in their natural habitat as part of a groundbreaking initiative with the aim of restoring the wild population of these magnificent animals, which are drastically in decline. With the Victoria Falls Lion Conservation Volunteering Project, you will train, feed and interact with lion cubs bred from captive lions, contribute towards research and their safe release into the wild, assist in the maintenance of biodiversity, and support members of the local communities.

As a volunteer, you will get to:

  • Be part of the first effort to release lions into the wild in Africa through this ground-breaking, globally-recognized lion conservation project.
  • Enjoy extremely close encounters with captive lions on their daily walks, and watch their naturla instincts develop while collecting data for our lion release program.
  • Experience the African bush in a unique way as you spend time out on the Masuwe Concession, adjacent to the Zambezi National Park, where you’ll be involved in anti-poaching, conservation and reserve maintenance activities like snare sweeps, boundary patrols and alien plant removal.
  • Make a difference for the next generation of young Zimbabweans as you facilitate Conservation Education programs, helping to inspire children to be passionate about the animals they live alongside.
  • Live a stone’s throw from one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World – Victoria Falls, where wildlife such as elephant roam the streets, and play a vital role in the conservation of this World Heritage Site.

How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Caring for the cubs

Caring for the lions

As a wildlife volunteer you will spend time daily with the lions, feeding them and making natural toys for them. This is an important aspect of the program as the lions will need feeding, their enclosures will require cleaning, and occasionally the lions will need veterinary care to ensure that they are kept in the best of health. You’ll also play an integral part in ‘behavior enrichment’ strategies for our cubs, which involves making toys from natural materials to enhance their time on and outside of their daily walks.

Lion walks

Lion Walks

Volunteer work entails taking the young lions (up until the age of 18 months) out every day as they are given the opportunity to practice their hunting skills, build their confidence and accustom to their natural environment. They need to adapt to it, learn from it, understand, observe, feel and smell the wild. Partake in some of the daily walks these cubs go on as they encounter wildlife such as buffalo and observe as their natural instincts take over.

Research

Research

You will assist our research team in gathering and analysing vital data, which is needed in making the best decisions for the lions’ welfare and their progression through the release program. Research being undertaken will vary depending on the needs of the project but could include looking at hunting behaviour, character traits of cubs, mane growth, spoor sizes and the effectiveness of behaviour enrichment programs.

Education

Education

You’ll also get to interact with the children in the local community schools, teaching them about the importance of conservation for the future of their environment and sustenance. This is a great chance to get a true glimpse into local culture and familiarize yourself with local customs.

About Victoria Falls

About victoria falls

About the Destination

Known as the Adventure Capital of Africa, Victoria Falls promises an exciting journey in work and play. You’ll stay at the Outpost Lodge, a private property for volunteers and staff, complete with a great dining area, pool and indoor and outdoor living spaces. People are incredibly friendly and hospitable and love to welcome you in sharing the beauty of their surroundings. Victoria Falls is a safe town with the most remarkable sunrises and sunsets.

The national parks here are some of the best in Africa, and wildlife is easily spotted roaming around. The misty spray of the Falls creates a permanent drizzle and waters the surrounding vegetation, often forming beautiful rainbows. The Zambezi River is home to crocodiles, hippos, and diverse bird life and draws many animals to drink from its banks.

With so many activities and projects on offer, Victoria Falls is the perfect location for gap-year programs, university volunteering, high school programs and working holidays. You will learn about local cultures and traditions, history and even how to talk a little of the local language - Ndebele! You will never run out of things to learn, adventures to experience, people to help or animals to see, and the impact it will have on your life will be priceless.

Feedback from our volunteers

Danni Fautley, UK

I got very involved and the more you put in the more you get out definitely applies to this project! Alanna, Meg and Lenard were very accommodating, open and willing to listen to and make our ideas and wishes during our time there happen!

Philippa Goff - UK

The time I had in Victoria Falls was the best 4 weeks of my life. My perspective on life has been changed, and the whole experience was life changing. I only properly realized what I had back home when I came to Vic Falls saw the lifestyle of others. I have met some amazing people who will be friends for life, and I will always have a special connection with lions and Victoria Falls.

If you have a passion for wildlife and want to meet some incredible people, I recommend this project.

Katie Schiffer, USA

Personally I gained knowledge of wildlife, the ecosystem, other cultures, and amazing new experiences I never could have witnessed anywhere else- coming in contact with so many wild animals, game drives, research, witnessing hyenas in their natural habitat, seeing the milky way so bright and clear! I also gaine the confidence to continue traveling on my own to volunteer or vacation elsewhere.

Fiona Heizmann, Germany

This project is amazing! Staff, activities and of course the lions were all wonderful - some of the best few weeks of my life, and hands down my favourite project I have ever done.

Gavin Mc Glone, UK

Africa has greatly influenced my perspective on life as it made me think you don’t need to have riches and possessions to be happy. This program was simply amazing, without a doubt the greatest thing I have ever done. The project has made me feel more confident and experienced in my dream to travel the world and hopefully come back to lion encounter for longer.
