How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Community upliftment

Community Upliftment

Volunteering opportunities can range from working as a teaching assistant, cooking and serving food to street children, hosting workshops or study programs, sports development, gardening, facilitating youth camps focusing on life skills training, and doing maintenance, refurbishment and painting as needed.

Horse therapy

Horse Therapy

You will be actively involved with a local school for children with disabilities, where we have developed our own horse therapy sessions here at Antelope Park in conjunction with our stables team to promote physical, occupational and emotional growth. You do not need experience with horses, just the passion to enrich these kids’ lives!

Teaching assistance

Teaching Assistance

As a teaching volunteer you offer vital support to over-burdened teachers as well as essential academic assistance to the students. Your engagement with the students will formulate part of the learning process and impart necessary life-skills most of these students are deprived of.

Lion conservation

Lion Conservation

Your volunteer work with the lions will include walking lions in the wild to familiarize them with their natural environment, providing water for the lions, enclosure maintenance and cleaning, behaviour enrichment and meat preparation. Other conservation activities will include boundary patrols, snare sweeping, bush walks and making food for the elephants and horses.

Conservation education

Conservation Education

You will play an essential role by assisting and educating children from local schools to understand the advantages of living alongside and conserving local wildlife habitats and ecosystems. Inspiring children to grow up as conservationists is an integral part of preserving the African Lion (and other wildlife) for future generations.

About Antelope Park

About antelope park

About the Destination

Set in over 3000 acres of open savannah grassland, Antelope Park is a game reserve where you will experience the opportunity to walk with and interact with lions, ride through the wilderness on elephant or horseback and view the abundance of wildlife in the Park.  During the evening, an exclusive Night Encounter offers you an amazing, close up experience of lions hunting in their natural environment.

Volunteers all stay together in the Volunteer Village, an area of twin and quad rooms with an entertainment area, fire pit and place to relax.  The accommodation is clean and comfortable with good showers and toilet facilities and there are also options to upgrade to riverside tents or lodges.  You will also be able to use the guest facilities which include the beautiful swimming pool beside the river, canoes, sundowner deck and bar/coffee shop.  You will receive three meals a day.  Breakfast and dinner are served at the main camp of the reserve and you will be given a delicious packed lunch for your working day.

With the great variety offered in this work and volunteer experience, you will leave Zimbabwe a different person than when you arrived.  Whether you are a student volunteering, embarking on a gap year program or a seasoned traveler, you will learn, acquire new skills and gain a new perspective on life.

Feedback from our volunteers

Denis Sop, Australia

Really going to miss the children and walking with lions on a daily basis. Everyone makes such a huge difference on African Impact's projects - cannot recommend African Impact quite enough and how well they look after us volunteers. As a volunteer our lives will never be the same - whilst I was teaching 5-10 year olds, little did I know (or expect) to be the one being taught a lesson...in life.

The difference that we can all make has a domino effect (beyond our stay) on the communities at large. The difference that we make to the children and conservation of lions, the lives we touch and give hope to, are moments and feelings that cannot be expressed in words. African Impact does a fantastic job along with all of the staff that work hard day-in day-out with no expectations.

Alex Olsson, Sweden

I just wanted to tell everyone that it’s a fantastic project, I really love it. It has a good balance between the work with the lions, and the kids that we meet in Gweru. Something that really touched my heart was when we had the chance to visit the where some of the street kids are living. That place will be stuck with me for the rest of my life, because it was one of the worst things I’ve ever witnessed.

No child should have to live like that. But that only motivates me to keep up the work and the effort that is made by the team at Antelope Park. The kids need us, and it’s a blessing that we can do something for them.

Adriana Falcon Vazquez, 23, Puerto Rico

"The experience of being surrounded by so many people from different backgrounds makes for a very rich environment. The community projects are amazing and you actually get to impact others and be transformed yourself.”

Josephine de Spirlet, 19, Belgium

“6 weeks in Antelope Park were just awesome - I feel like I've spent 3 weeks here ! (Time is running soooo fast) I met so many people who were just so lovely !! So many experiences and there were all different ! ( Lion feeding, saw a delivery, teaching the children in a primary school, helping people who are in need..)”

Chloe Rispoli, 20, UK

"It was by far one of the best experience I have ever lived. Meeting people from all over the world, walking with the lions and seeing the african animals it is what makes it special. I only stayed 2 weeks in Antelope Park and I can say that it was not enough because in community you get to do lots of projects and you get to meet people to whom you get attached extremely quick. Before arriving to antelope park I did not know what to expect and I must say that it was a pleasant surprise.”
