How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Lion walks research

LION WALKS & RESEARCH

Spend time working hands-on with our captive-bred lions to help familiarise them with their natural environment. They need to learn from it, understand, observe, feel and smell the wild. Partake in some of the daily walks these cubs go on as they encounter wildlife such as buffalo, and observe as their natural instincts take over. During these walks and at other times, you will collect essential data on the lions which is used by the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT). In addition to the walks, you will be involved in the care of the animals. They need to be fed, have their enclosures cleaned and maintained and occasionally need veterinary care to ensure that they are kept in the best of health. You’ll also play an integral part in behaviour enrichment sessions for our cubs, which involves making toys from natural materials to enhance their time during and outside of their daily walks.

Predator wildlife research

PREDATOR & WILDLIFE RESEARCH

Work alongside our skilled research team in the Zambezi National Park, home to lions, leopards, cheetah, African wild dogs, spotted hyena and much more. Your role will be to assist in collecting baseline data on the presence or absence of each species within specific areas that are used to improve conservation management plans. This includes tracking and data collection on spotted hyena, as well as general large predator census creation through spoor transects, physical sightings and call up surveys conducted at certain times of the year. Large predators play a key role in the health and survival of the overall ecosystem, and as such their populations and distribution must be constantly monitored. Take part in other key wildlife research that we conduct such as weekly game counts, bird surveys, and elephant and giraffe research to compile identification kits– projects all designed to monitor wildlife populations and support conservation efforts locally and across the region.

About the Destination

Known as the Adventure Capital of Africa, Victoria Falls promises an exciting journey in work and play. You’ll stay at Tokki Lodge, a private property for volunteers and staff, complete with a pool, outdoor living space, fire pit and barbecue area. Wifi is provided at the lodge at a small cost of about US$1 per day.

The Zimbabwean people are incredibly friendly and hospitable, and love to welcome you in sharing the beauty of their surroundings. Victoria Falls is a safe town with the most remarkable sunrises and sunsets.

The National Parks here are some of the best in Africa, and wildlife is easily spotted roaming around. The misty spray of the Falls creates a permanent drizzle and waters the surrounding vegetation, often forming beautiful rainbows. The Zambezi River is home to crocodiles, hippos, kingfishers and draws many animals to drink from its streams.

With so many activities and projects on offer, Victoria Falls is the perfect location for gap-year programs, university volunteering, high school programs and working holidays. You will learn about local cultures and traditions, history and even how to talk a little of the vernacular. You will never run out of things to learn, adventures to experience, people to help or animals to see, and the impact it will have on your life will be priceless.
