How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Throughout your stay, you will shadow and assist ALERT’s Research Technicians in all aspects of their work, which could include:

Laura 517

  • Behavioral observation of lions in stage two of ALERT’s African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Program to collect data on group dynamics and social interactions, territorial behaviors and hunting skills.
  • Observation of play behavior in younger cubs - ankle-tapping, stalking, chasing and fighting; all needed for the development of successful hunting skills. By observing our stage one lions engaging in various forms of play, we can establish if they are behaving in a similar way to those growing up in the wild.

  • The Zambezi National Park Hyena Project to monitor spotted hyena populations and collect data on population size, dynamics, recruitment, home-range, prey preference and contact with livestock, as well as the interaction between the species and wild lions.
  • Predator surveys to inform species conservation management plans through studies to determine distribution and behavior. As human-wildlife conflict (HWC) issues are widespread across Africa, data collection is also carried out to assist with on-going mitigation methods.
  • Biodiversity studies to monitor the diversity of wildlife within Africa’s national parks. Data is collected to help calculate species density and abundance, so that sound conservation management plans can be developed and implemented to safeguard biodiversity loss.

  • Forest management programs to study how communities are interacting with their environment in order to reduce rampant deforestation, which is having a negative effect on biodiversity and food security.
  • Biological monitoring programs to identify and understand vegetation types; crucial for effective habitat management and the eradication of destructive Invasive alien plant species (IAPS).
  • Entomology surveys to determine species richness and functional diversity with the aim of achieving and maintaining healthy ecosystems. As a dominant force in the biodiversity of forest fauna, the need to take insects into account when managing natural ecosystems cannot be overemphasized.

  • Working in a professional video production unit, you will be involved in capturing wildlife on both film and stills cameras. You will also have the opportunity to assist with editing and final production.

Feedback from our volunteers

Jenna Ackles

The highlight of my internship was how wonderful my students were at the ALERT Education Centre. You could easily see that these students were there for the right reasons; that they wanted to learn about the environment and were genuinely excited about what they were going to learn about. Saying goodbye to my students was so difficult! Another highlight of mine was getting to know the street children.

I truly felt when I was leaving that I had made an impact on their lives and they most certainly made an impact on mine, as I was saying goodbye and crying. I have gained lifelong friendships, as well as the skills and knowledge that could only be gained from such an experience. I will take this experience with me everywhere I go.

Vicky Lalumiere

"At 39 years old I decided to challenge myself and apply for an internship with ALERT. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I spent 6 months working alongside the ALERT and Lion Encounter team on fundraising, animal research, marketing initiatives, and volunteer management. It was extremely rewarding from both a professional and personal level.

I have learned so much from the experience: building relationships with local people, the challenge of creating new ideas for a non-profit organization, working closely with the volunteers and of course the beautiful animals I was able to gain so much knowledge about.

By working in the fundraising and marketing areas, I was also able to get a bigger picture of the overall organization and everything it takes to have this program running. And of course, I got to live in the African bush - much different to city life."

Alexander Cloonan

"Following my training in observing lions, it was clear that conservation biology centred around the African lion was a career I wish to pursue. Every moment spent observing one of the most magnificent animals on Earth was a highlight. Although you never make contact with the release pride, you see the bonds forming between pride members and the struggles internally when witnessing conflict amongst them as well.

This internship has given me confidence to make a plan and carry it out, the wisdom to understand the limitations of each project and an indescribable amount of happiness knowing that I have been able to partake in an ongoing effort to restore Zimbabwe’s ecological status.’
