How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Research

RESEARCH

With your help, African Impact aims to provide valuable research in the hope to make a positive change in the sustainability of dolphins. Monitoring and researching human-dolphin interaction helps the government we partner with to formulate policies to regulate dolphin tourism, so that dolphins do not become stressed and/or driven to other parts of the ocean. Although they love human interaction, dolphins may be forced to seek quieter waters if they are faced with too much activity, especially during feeding or nursing, so your research will not only help the dolphins, but also the local communities who rely on dolphin tourism for income.

Eco development

ECO DEVELOPMENT

On this project you will help educate local school children about how to sustainably utilize their local marine resources in a fun, activity based after school club.  You could also assist in workshops with local boat drivers to encourage eco-friendly dolphin tours, or develop information boards about the local marine ecosystem and conservation.

Padi diving course

PADI DIVING COURSE

Zanzibar boasts some of the most diverse marine life accompanied by beautiful beaches and warm turquoise waters. What better place to take advantage and become a certified PADI diver. As an African Impact volunteer you will receive an exclusive 15% discount on any of our diving courses and dives whether you are just starting out or an advanced diver.

About the Destination

Zanzibar is a tropical paradise, an island just off the coast of Tanzania which is rich with culture, history, and also is home to some of the most beautiful coastlines in Eastern Africa. When you think of crystal turquoise oceans and endless white sandy beaches, Zanzibar is it.

Life is simple here for tourists; sun, sea and sunsets each night, but many don’t get to experience what life is like for the locals, the struggles they face living on a remote island with limited access to resources and job opportunities and you will see this every day during your time volunteering and be part of creating better opportunities for the locals.

The bustling city of Stone Town is where you will fly into and the area itself is a hub of activity, with traders selling spices, fruits and fish caught fresh that day on every street corner, while also boasting the impressive title of a World Heritage Site.

Just an hour away – and an adventurous drive through Zanzibar’s remote jungle roads with our enthusiastic staff members - volunteers will soon find themselves in the village of Jambiani and Kizimkazi where you will live. These are rural traditional villages that lay on the stunning white sandy beaches that run along the Southern Coast of the island, scattered with palm trees, coconuts and the incredible friendly and warm locals. Life is much quieter here than in Stone Town and as fishing villages, many of the local villagers have little to no formal education, as well as limited opportunities for their children to access the English language and create brighter futures for themselves.

Living directly on the beach in Jambiani, the area itself is known for its world-class snorkelling, scuba-diving and marine-spotting opportunities. Whether you’re jumping into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to explore the coral reefs, snorkelling with the resident dolphins in the area or sunning yourself on the beach, Zanzibar is the perfect location to ‘get off the grid’, while also making long-lasting and sustainable changes for the local people and marine wildlife.
