How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Volunteers joining this project will take part in the below activities during the first 2 weeks of their placement. For those wishing to stay longer than 2 weeks, a choice between a variety of community volunteering initiatives will be available and the volunteer will then join that project on a full-time basis. (E.g. Joining the sports project, the building project or the teaching project.)

Building and construction projects

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

You will be involved in our on-going building projects with the community and local schools.  We use a process called Eco-Bricking - a unique, sustainable and FREE way to make bricks to build incredible structures. An Eco-Brick is a PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle filled with litter. Once filled, these bottle are used as bricks, offering both a free building material and a way to recycle waste and clean up the community. Using Eco-Bricks, volunteers build greenhouses, chicken coops, compost bins, benches and so much more.  Its a great way to leave a lasting legacy in Livingstone!

Sports and physical education

SPORTS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Most children have very limited access to any sports at school, therefore missing out on sport’s many benefits, including healthy physical exercise, teamwork and leadership. We need your enthusiasm and passion to help us develop games and coach the kids. From football to rugby and from athletics to basketball, whatever your interest, helping the children get active is exceptionally rewarding.

Afterschool clubs

AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS

Many children living in the community are forced to grow up very quickly. They are expected to take on household chores and in many cases, older siblings are obliged to look after the younger children in the household. In order to give these children a place to learn and experience new things, we host fun and educational after-school clubs.

This program gives you the chance to be creative at Art Club, find the story teller in you during Reading Club, put numbers together for Maths Club or just make up some games to play under the local mango trees.

What else will i be involved in

WHAT ELSE WILL I BE INVOLVED IN?

Farming: We work with sustainable farming programs and assist by helping to prepare the land, planting, watering, weeding and harvesting. The work is fun and hard and the results are brilliant!

Maramba Old People's Home: A favourite trip for many of our volunteers, a visit to Maramba to play games and share stories with the elderly is a humbling and heart-warming experience.
