Put your passion for sport to good use as you provide sports coaching to children at Zambian schools and sports clubs. Sports resources are limited in Livingstone and while there is a lack of skilled trainers, the enthusiasm for physical exercise is high. As a volunteer, you’ll coach children of different age groups and help them develop important skills. In addition, you’ll get to know and assist the Livingstone community through a variety of building, farming, and education initiatives.

As a volunteer, you’ll get to:

  • Teach physical education classes at schools, during which you can teach games and introduce your own lesson plans.
  • Coach children at sports clubs in sports such as rugby, soccer, volleyball, and netball.
  • Teach lessons on physical health and general life skills at schools, focusing on issues like hygiene, nutrition, exercise and teamwork.
  • Offer children enriching stimulation through extra-curricular reading, math and art clubs.
  • Assist with rewarding construction work by refurbishing, building or painting classrooms.
  • Get your hands dirty at our organic farms, which offer community members education on growing food and becoming more self-sustainable.
  • Work and live in a welcoming Zambian community, and immerse yourself in the local culture.

How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Physical education classes

Physical Education Classes

Volunteer work involves providing physical education classes once a week at five different schools. You will run the physical education classes, teach the students new games and design new lessons. The physical education classes we run will also allow you to use your initiative and creativity to relate your sessions to an aspect of health, such as nutrition, or even an upcoming event such as the Olympics or the World Cup. Should you have expertise in a specific sport, you can teach an entire lesson focused around it.

Although your main focus will be on the sports project, this program will also provide you with great opportunity to experience and be involved in many other community projects as well as a chance to participate in the one day volunteer exchange with our lion conservation project in the National Park.

Life skills program

Life Skills Program

Part of the volunteering program will include teaching lessons on various life skill topics such as health and hygiene, nutrition, teamwork, smoking, drugs, alcohol and HIV/AIDS.

Coaching

Coaching

Working with various local sports organizations, provincial and district ministries for sports and other NGOs, you will have the opportunity to coach sporting teams as well as to teach new drills to the coaches. African Impact has a strong partnership with the TAG Rugby Trust, which means you will coach large groups of enthusiastic children in an exciting new sport. With the opportunity to utilize your skills in the development of local coaches, you can help further increase the sustainability of this project. Furthermore, as a sports coach, you will have the opportunity to coach football, volleyball, basketball, netball, rugby or any other sport you would like to introduce to the children during afterschool clubs, community sports days and holiday clubs. The African Impact Sports Project also supports the government fun run and awareness days.

About Livingstone

About livingstone

About the Destination

Livingstone is a prime safari spot for visitors from all over the world and is home to the breath-taking Victoria Falls, known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or “the smoke that thunders”. Here you can catch sight of a variety of wildlife at various national parks, as well as taking a river-boat or elephant-back safari or going on rhino bush walks.

The volunteer house is a private home situated at Livingstone Backpackers. It is right in the center of town, meaning you conveniently have access to all amenities. There is a pool, barbeque and rock-climbing wall to enjoy at your accommodation, with a lovely outdoor terrace to put your feet up and relax in the great climate all year round.

Major stores and a variety of restaurants and bars are located very near to your accommodation. The people of Livingstone are amazingly friendly and welcoming. You will have the opportunity to shop at local markets for unique items to remember your journey, and you can also take a cultural tour to learn more about the local community’s way of life, cuisine and customs.

To make the most of your volunteer opportunity in Africa, you can also cross the border to Botswana or Zimbabwe, where you can taste a little more of Africa and experience the warmth and beauty it has to offer.

Feedback from our volunteers

Kate McCleary, USA

"It has certainly been a fantastic unique experience.  I would like to come back, and support the program through promotion as it is something everyone can gain from.  It has taught me that there is so much that can be done when you give back, and that it's down to YOU as a person to do so."

Amy Telford, UK

"Everyone is so friendly and it has made such an impact on me. This trip has made me so much more confident with gaining independence that I didn’t think I had before but have found. Because of my lack of confidence in my independence I never imagined myself enjoying travelling, however, this trip has made me want to be more adventurous and hungry for another trip.

I have always known I want to make an influence in as many people’s lives as I can through my later career and am excited to start thinking on how this trip can influence that."

Steven Thom, UK

"I though the programme was a great way to allow children to learn sports that they would not necessarily get to play. As the schools do not have PE equipment, it is down to African impact sports volunteers to be there to teach them, which is why it is a fantastic programme. Children just love their sport and putting a smile on their faces everyday shows that the programme is doing what it should."

Hunt Collings, UK

"Difficult to describe – like-minded people from all backgrounds, as well as the massively enthusiastic staff, combined with the beautiful scenery of Victoria Falls and the surrounding area all make this a fantastic experience. Even despite the extreme poverty that is present in parts of Livingstone, you can really feel the difference that African Impact has and is making to the local communities. In all a very rewarding program for both volunteer and the community."
