How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Although your volunteer work will largely be focused on special needs education you will also spend afternoons helping the local community in various other projects.

Special needs education

Special Needs Education

Your volunteer work at the Cheshire Home will include teaching the children and giving them one on one attention. You will do art projects, play games and do some fun exercises with them. You may also need to help in meal preparation and feeding, as help is needed daily.

Building and farming

Building and Farming

To assist in the development of very limited educational facilities and to help set up sustainable farming programs, you may have to get your hands dirty with some hard labor. This might include mixing cement, making and laying bricks, laying concrete floors, plastering walls and painting. On the farming side, volunteers sometimes lend a helping hand preparing farming land, planting seeds, watering, weeding and harvesting, all while soaking up the warm African sun.

Afterschool reading literacy art clubs

After School Clubs

After-school programs help a great deal in the development of children, in their motor skills, reading, literacy and creative development. Part of your volunteer work will include teaching children the alphabet, phonics, spelling, pronunciation and general reading and comprehension skills. You will also conduct and develop outdoor games and art projects and just have some fun interacting with the kids.

About Livingstone

About livingstone

About the Destination

Livingstone, Zambia is a beautiful, rural town that many call “the real Africa.”  Just a stone’s throw away from one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World - Victoria Falls - Livingstone is the ultimate playground for those who love adventure sports, wildlife and the great outdoors.  Whether you bungee jump, swim in the 'Devil’s Pool', feed some crocodiles, white water raft down the mighty Zambezi or just enjoy a breath-taking sunset, you will experience things that only Livingstone can offer!  Don’t worry, you will certainly not miss out on wildlife. There are many national parks where you can observe lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, elephant and giraffes and often, we spot some of these animals along the road on our way to project!

As Livingstone volunteer, you will be fully immersed in the rural community every day. Your mornings are focused on the project you select - medical, sports, teaching, environment, gender empowerment or building.  What makes being a Livingstone community volunteer so unique and different than any other project is that you are able to experience so many different activities because every afternoon is different.  You will join in a variety of activities that help uplift the community including After School Club, Reading Club, Math Club, Art Club, Maramba Old People’s Home, Linda Farm, Adult Literacy Club, Life Skills workshops and more!  This gives you a well-rounded experience and exposes you to all parts of the community.

You’ll be staying in a private volunteer house within the popular and welcoming Livingstone Backpackers.  You will have access to a lovely swimming pool, hot tub, lounge and bar area and if that wasn’t enough, a full climbing wall as well!  Your accommodation is a 5 minute walk away from Livingstone's town center, which has many stores and a great selection of bars and restaurants.  You won’t want to leave your “new home” as the staff will become your new family!

Come join us in this special place that will fill your heart with compassion and love.  We look forward to welcoming you!

Feedback from our volunteers

Izabela Forys, UK

"I went to Zambia in 2011 for 6 weeks on the Medical Project, loved it so much I decided to go back in 2012 and go on the Disabled Child Care Project. The children are all amazing, some with learning difficulties and some with physical disabilities. The day care centre is great for preparing them for society and life ahead.

I was there for 6 weeks (honestly not long enough) and I will always remember how grateful the children and staff were for me just being there. It was honestly an unforgettable experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life. It’s an eye opener and you will make memories that you will never forget. I just wish I could have stayed longer, Africa is a part of me now and I can't wait to go back!!"

Nicole Arathoon, Australia

"I think it will hit me more once I return to Australia but I have a new found respect for volunteers and their dedication and commitment. Living in Africa , even just for two weeks has been an amazing experience - meeting the local people, walking everywhere, relaxed lifestyle, warm climate."
