How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Lion conservation

Lion Conservation

A large part of your work as you volunteer with animals abroad, will include taking care of the lions. You may need to prepare meat for them, feed them, clean their enclosures and occasionally assist with veterinary care to ensure that they are kept in the best of health.

Research

Research

A number of research activities are conducted to better understand lion behaviour and ecology. As a wildlife volunteer you will assist in gathering and analyzing data needed in making decisions for the animal’s welfare and release. The research studies being undertaken whilst on your placement will vary depending on the needs of the project at the time but may include looking at hunting development, character traits, spoor sizes or mane growth.

Elephant research

Elephant Research

Volunteering opportunities will also include work with elephants as you join the research team to identify individual elephants, to track seasonal changes, score body condition and record location and group sizes.

Conservation education

Conservation Education

You will visit schools in the area and do some voluntary teaching about hygiene, the importance of wildlife conservation and effective resource management. The nature of the programs operating at the time of your placement will be given to you on arrival.

About Livingstone

About livingstone

About the Destination

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to one half of the 'The Smoke That Thunders', known worldwide as Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. Your volunteer accommodation is located in the Mosi-oa-Tunya national park in Livingstone, Zambia away from the noise of traffic in the city. The house is surrounded by beautiful woodland and grassland with plenty of birds, and animals including giraffe, zebra, elephant, white rhino, warthog, sable, eland, buffalo, impala and other antelope.

The accommodation is simple, with plenty hot and cold water, showers, and rooms shared between 3 and 4 volunteers. Unless your daily activities require you to take a packed meal, meals will be served at the house and are prepared by the on-site chefs.

This volunteer working holiday promises to be an adventure of a life time. In such a beautiful location, with so much activity, the warmth of Africa’s people and wonder of its amazing wildlife, how can you possibly go wrong?

Feedback from our volunteers

Margaret Hatezic, Australia

I wanted to let you know that the experience I had with you in Zambia was truly a cliched "once in a life time" experience. Being able to work with the lions and being a very small part of a very big and honourable cause is something I will treasure for life.

I admire you for being able to deal with people from all walks of life, from all corners of the globe, of all ages with a multitude of cultural attitudes thrown in.

Marie-Helene Hardouin, France

Spending some time with the lions was the most amazing experience of my life. Being part of this project was a privilege I will never forget!

Paula Mannu, UK

I feel this is an excellent program, both in helping with the lion re-population issue and the help given to the local community. I have gained a feeling of true self satisfaction in helping with the lion project and great esteem for the work in the local villages. It was awesome to see the smiles on the faces of the children at the schools.
