How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Jamie right in the middle at the back )

As part of this exciting volunteer working holiday you will be planting trees, capturing data on tree monitoring missions, assisting with sustainability workshops, educating children on the importance of trees and their natural environment, and on how they can play an active role in preserving it. You may also work closely with local UN Climate Ambassadors and our partners at the Zambian Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture.

Your eco-education activities as a reforestation volunteer in Zambia will involve a brief introduction to the community regarding tree care, watering schedules, survival rates and demonstrate and encourage tree planting. You will also introduce solar power with a short discussion and set up a solar cooker to demonstrate the cooking of cake or rice for 1 hour. You’ll be actively involved in giving solar cooker and rocket stove demonstrations to local communities.

During the afternoons you will join in volunteer community projects with other volunteers in Livingstone. This may include building and construction projects, sustainable farming work and educational activities for kids.

Afterschool Clubs will require your assistance with reading, to support the development of literacy as well as art projects, nurturing the students creativity and enhancing life skills. You will also have a lot of fun playing games and interacting with the kids, giving them a chance to be carefree and expend some of their boundless energy.

In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, you will work with adults in the Adult Literacy Class, to help improve their literacy rate and subsequently chances of employment. Another life changing volunteer work opportunity is assisting the elderly at the Maramba Old People’s Homewhere many aredestitute and without anyone to look after them. You will engage the residents in games, reading and exercise activities.

About Livingstone

About livingstone

About the Destination

Livingstone is a rustic town with quaint markets, shops, restaurants and bars. As a volunteer in Zambia you will be based in a comfortable and secure private space at The Livingstone Backpackers, which is a 5-minute walk away from Livingstone's town center. The accommodation features a dining and lounge area, bar, swimming pool, large garden, and rock-climbing wall.

Volunteers are usually accommodated in a dedicated 5 bedroom house on the property which is set aside for the exclusive use of African Impact. The 5 bedrooms sleep 4-8 people, with bunk beds in each room. Bed linen is provided, however you will need to bring your own towel. The house has 24 hour security and lockers to store your valuables.

You will be provided with three meals a day from Monday to Friday. Weekends are usually good times for tourist activities and exploring the surrounding area, so it's a great opportunity to try out some of the local cuisine and nearby restaurants.

This volunteer work opportunity is a great way of getting your hands dirty, sharing, learning and researching environmental and climate change issues, and exploring this beautiful corner of Africa.

Feedback from our volunteers

Stephen McKee

"When my partner and I decided to get married, we knew we wanted to do something for our honeymoon that would be challenging for us and make a difference to people less fortunate. Since my wife Duca is a garden designer in London, and I (Stephen) do self employed building work, we gravitated towards practical building and environmental type work. We found out about 'Greenpop' through another organisation and began working as volunteers for them in September 2014 for two weeks in Livingstone, Zambia on their Reforestation and Eco-education project. We were delighted how organised and committed the staff and other volunteers were, who were enthusiastic about reducing the amount of trees being cut down for charcoal, and also involved in waste management/recycling projects such as 'turning trash into treasure'! While there we learned about sustainable cooking methods from solar cooking to 'rocket stove' building which uses alternatives to charcoal for heat, and also planted a few trees to make up for those lost! We learned about Eco-bricks that use plastic bottles filled with plastic not currently recycled to use for building. The time there opened our eyes to the problems faced by the communities and  we will bring back the skills learned, happy memories and friendships made!"

Kirsty

"This was an incredible adventure! I had an absolute blast planting trees, getting dirty and meeting incredible people along the way. Please continue with this tremendous cause."

Cassy

"What an amazing, heart-warming and awesome experience it has been here with Greenpop! Meeting so many down to earth people from all over and Zambian locals has been my most favourite part. Just a week in and I have made lifelong friends. I'm happy to have contributed a small part in such an epic project."

Tash

"Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have been able to experience the incredible work that you do. You all are an inspiration and I thank you a million times over for changing my perspective on life. I don't think I will ever look at the world in the same. I've learnt so much and will take a small piece of green-ness in my heart wherever I go."

Paul

"I came here as a sceptic (as years of a academia train you to be): is this going to be a "plant and forget?" an "offset and move on?" How happy I was to see that Greenpop hold true to its mission that planting trees was not all that happens. What a phenomenal effort is spent on teaching locals and kids to care for their space, their trees and their livelihoods. The complexity of the environment problem was fully appreciated and treated with complex approaches."

Bex

"The whole experience has blown me away and taught me so much! I have met some amazing people here that I shall never forget and Zambia really has a special place in my heart. Everyone has been so welcoming and awesome and hopefully our paths shall cross in the future."

Libby and Mark (Belgium)

"Thank you for a phenomenal experience, so much more than expected. Your professionalism and organisation, combined with passion and fun make a winning combination! You're taking the world by storm, Thank you for making it happen."

Ghafeethi Abrahams

"This was a life changing event for me, it was an amazing experience and a wonderful crowd. I will not look at a tree in the same way, I now see them as part of me. I learnt a lot and met amazing people, thank you for making this possible!"
