Enjoy the best of both worlds as you transform the lives of children and adults through education, and spend time in the beauty of nature getting up close and personal with the amazing chimpanzees at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage.

Chimp looks moody
  • Assist with the welfare and rehabilitation of not only Chimpanzees, orphaned or injured through poaching and habitat destruction, but countless other species in the 2nd largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world.
  • Play a vital role in this wildlife orphanage that has received many honors and awards, including the United Nations Environment Program Global 500 Award (2000), the Audi /Terra Nova nomination (2001), a special commendation from the Nedbank / mail & Guardian Green Trust Awards (2000), and the Jane Goodall Award (1995).
  • As well as assisting with the wildlife, you will also work with local communities; voluntary teaching at the Twampane Community School and staff compounds in general lessons and conservation education.
  • A portion of the land at Chimfunshi is now dedicated to growing of crops such as cabbage, maize, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes and groundnuts, allowing Chimfunshi to become self-sufficient and less reliant on donations by growing its own food for the chimpanzees.  The farm is always in desperate need of extra helping hands, so twice a week you will help out at the farm.

How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Voluntary teaching

Voluntary Teaching

As a teaching volunteer at the Teaching and Community Development Project you will spend time providing assistance at the Twampane Community & Conservation School or at the outer staff compounds where the children cannot access the school because of distance and lack of transport. You do not need to be qualified; all you need is a desire to make an impact.

While the teacher is teaching a class, it is extremely valuable to have an assistant who can go around and help individual children with their school work. Since classes are catering to a varied age group and learning levels, the pupils do not often get this individual attention.  The extra help you provide has the potential to make a lasting difference by identifying students who are falling behind and giving them additional support.

Chimfunshi has one teacher on staff that caters to children from 5 – 13 years of age. Because of the diverse age group, lessons are split to morning lessons for the 9 – 13 year olds, and afternoon lessons for 5 – 8 year olds. There is also a lack of textbooks and teaching aids and the portion of the lessons are spent writing the tasks that would normally be written in a book.

Your engagement with the students will formulate part of the learning process and impart necessary life-skills most of these students are deprived of.

Adult literacy program

Adult Literacy Program

The Adult Literacy Club (ALC) works with adults in the community to help improve their English. The ALC program has a planned syllabus with three different levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The twice-weekly lessons help participants to improve their understanding of written and spoken English, as well as, teach them valuable everyday skills such as math and finance. Learning these skills will help increase the job opportunities for participants.

Holiday club

Holiday Club

During school vacation time (April, August, December) your volunteer work will include assisting to plan and run a holiday club. You will integrate fun activities with educational themes such as the importance of a healthy lifestyle, conservation, geography, English & maths. Holiday Club offers students valuable time to catch up on their learning, study new topics and provides a safe environment to spend their holiday breaks.

Working in the community

Working in the Community

A new Community Health Post is currently being built. Assistance in the building, painting and gardening may be required. Once operational there may be opportunity to assist the clinical staff in records management, infection control, and education of health care topics such as HIV, malaria, health & nutrition. You may also be required to assist with conservation education at the Education Centre.

You will have the opportunity to assist with farming duties, such as harvesting, sorting, weeding, fertilizing, picking oranges and lemons, as well as working in the fruit tree nursery assisting with the propagating, bagging, weeding, watering and planting of fruit tree seedlings.

Walks on the wild side

Walks on the Wild Side

Each week you will have the unique opportunity to walk along side human’s closest relative. As a wildlife volunteer in Africa you will join the senior keeper on a 2 hour bush walk alongside 4 of Chimfunshi’s chimps - an absolutely incredible experience.

Chimp behavioural enrichment

Chimp Behavioural Enrichment

As you volunteer with animals abroad you will work hard to provide a bit of extra stimulation for the chimpanzees with ‘Behavioural Enrichment’ activities. Behavioural Enrichment helps to keep the chimps who need to stay in an enclosed setting both physically and mentally active.

About Chimfunshi

About chimfunshi

About the Destination

Chingola is the closest town to Chimfunshi and home to the biggest open-cast mine in Africa. Here the climate is warm and temperate and surrounds are beautifully lush and green especially during the summer rainy season.

While at Chimfunshi, you will be provided with on-site dormitory style accommodation. This includes beds and bedding, long-drop [earth] toilets, showers & washing facilities. You will be sharing a room with other volunteers and Chimfunshi staff clean the facilities daily. The toilets and showers are separate, just outside the volunteer block. There is hot water available in the late afternoon/evening.

There is solar electricity in the volunteer accommodation and UK plug points are available for charging personal equipment. As electricity is solar it must be conserved for the use of all. Internet is available for a small fee on a shared computer, however please keep in mind that connections can be very slow in Africa. Volunteer and staff work together as a team to prepare and cook all the meals. We often ask volunteers to share a traditional meal from their home country as part of the cultural exchange.

This work and volunteer experience is a fantastic combination project which will impact not only those you teach and the chimps you care for, but will also have a huge impact on your own life. You will gain a new sense of appreciation, make many new friends and learn about a whole new way of life in the local communities. Join an adventure of a lifetime and volunteer in Zambia.

Feedback from our volunteers

Sabrine Jesperson, Denmark

After two weeks as a volunteer at Chimfunshi I have experienced more than I could ever imagine. At Chimfunshi they manage to capture every possible activity into a short amount of time so that the volunteers don’t miss out on anything. It is therefore impossible to describe all the amazing work I have already been a part off. However I will say that I have joined a group of amazing people who have devoted their life to making a safe and secure environment for the chimpanzees.

Every day we join the keepers with food preparation, enclosure cleaning, boundary patrol, Behaviour Enrichment, infrastructure improvements and so much more all in the benefit of these incredible animals. When we do Behaviour Enrichment, we enrich the real clever chimpanzees, it is clear that our work is making a difference for the chimpanzees at Chimfunshi.

As a volunteer I have also enjoyed the experience of meeting other volunteers from all over the world. With so many people gathered at one place there is never a boring moment. The evenings at Chimfunshi are filled with fun, games and a few drinks now and then. One of my particularly favourite evenings is going out to the flood plain to watch the stars, which cannot be compared to any other place in the world or when we all gather for movie nights and of course there is always popcorn.

This program has given me so much, and I strongly recommend it to everyone. I will leave this place knowing that I have made an impact on something worth supporting. Joining this amazing group of hard working people at Chimfunshi has indeed been a life experience, which I will never forget.

I am so glad I decided to join this programme if I hadn't I'd have missed an amazing experience.

Helen, Sweden

My time here has been an experience that made my life richer and I hope the work I have done have made a difference to the chimps. I have enjoyed the lifestyle that is so different from home and the people here are so friendly and always have a smile on their face. I will have this time in my heart forever.

Madi Shiller-Chan, Australia

My time here at Chimfunshi has been such a memorable experience, being constantly surrounded by Chimpanzees and such a vibrant community has been absolutely amazing. By having this combination of rewarding hard-work and animal research has just made this volunteer program greatly ideal for me.  When I was first introduced to Chimfunshi society and Zambian countryside, I was greeted by enthusiastically waving children; this kindness and friendliness remained throughout my entire stay at Chimfunshi.  As I personally want to become a Zoologist later on in life, being able to be involved in various Chimpanzee rehabilitation activities was so beneficial for me.  What I loved so much about this program was that there were challenging moments, such as farming in the African sun, or teaching children with nearly no knowledge of the English language, yet these challenges always proved such a high reward, each time I felt so privileged and proud to be benefiting such an amazing community and such amazing animals.

Thank you so much African Impact for making these brilliant experiences possible.

Anna Roberts, UK

It's been great to have such a varied experience as a volunteer. As well as working with the chimpanzees, there's also the opportunity to get involved with the rest of the community here and I've really enjoyed playing with the kids on the floodplain and learning the local language Bemba. Last week I ran an arts and crafts session at the local school where the kids made puppets, and it was so lovely to see how excited they all were about it. It's really great to experience living out in the bush, and plenty of opportunity to explore on days off, be it cycling around the site, or canoeing down the Kafue River (with thankfully no hippo or crocodile sightings as yet!) The only bad thing I can say about my time here is that it is flying past and will be over so soon, but I will remember it forever.

My time here has been an experience that made my life richer and I hope the work I have done have made a difference to the chimps. I have enjoyed the lifestyle that is so different from home and the people here are so friendly and always have a smile on their face. I will have this time in my heart forever.
