How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Evening Fun

We have lots of events and activities happening, from fundraisers and games nights to quiz evenings to movie nights. There are also lots of nice restaurants and cafes nearby to relax and unwind at the end of a hard day’s work.

Getting to know moshi

Getting to Know Moshi

Moshi is a small, friendly town with lots to see and do. There are numerous cafes, restaurants and bars as well as shops and markets to explore. The people are very welcoming and will be quick to teach you about the local culture and a bit of Swahili.

Sightseeing

Sightseeing

As well as being a very vibrant town, Moshi is also a gateway to some of the most beautiful sights Tanzania and the continent of Africa has to offer; the Serengeti, Lake Manyara Ngorogoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro are all on the doorstep. There are also numerous day trips for you to undertake, exploring local villages, waterfalls and hot springs and learning about coffee farming and the local way of life.

Kilimanjaro climbs

Kilimanjaro Climbs

Kilimanjaro National Park has become one of Tanzania’s most visited parks, and at the heart of the park is the highest peak in Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro.  As it’s one of the highest volcanoes in the world, weather patterns can be erratic and hard to predict, but overall, the best time to climb the mountain is from late June to October and from late December to February.  Taking a trip to the top may take some good preparation and acclimatization time, but there’s also an option for a day hike to the first base camp, which you can do on the weekend. You can also combine your hike with some fundraising.

About Kilimanjaro

About kilimanjaro

About the Destination

Mt Kilimanjaro is one of the most iconic attractions in the whole of Africa, the Continent’s highest peak and nestling at its base is the busy tourist town of Moshi; a bustling network of food markets and restaurants, where one can’t escape the ‘catchy’ Swahili music of the locals… and don’t forget the goats who will regularly stop the traffic!

As well as being in awe of the different colours, smells and sounds in Moshi, you can’t help but notice the incredible variety of cultures and specifically that of the Masai people, colourfully dressed in their traditional ‘Warrior’ clothing and brandishing some of the most impressive jewellery. The Masai are gentle people who live very traditional lives and you will get the life-changing opportunity to spend time with these tribes, dancing, drumming, tasting their food and begin to understand the vibrant culture of these unique people.

Living just a short drive away from Moshi, you will spend your time volunteering in the rural village of Mdawi, in an exclusive fully furnished volunteer house with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy nights spent under the stars (and trust me, you’ve never seen so many!) and opportunities for you to interact with and bond with the local villagers.

As well as hosting some of the friendliest and welcoming people in Africa, you can’t come to Tanzania and not experience its other locals… the wildlife. With monkeys in the trees and lizards sunning themselves on the rocks in your garden, living here is a perfect balance between integrating with the Tanzanians and enjoying the spectacular nature the unforgettable country offers. Why not catch the Great Wildebeest Migration at the world-famous Serengeti Park? Or see herd after herd of wild elephants from a hot air balloon drifting along the plains?

If it’s even greater adventures you’re after, how about trekking up Kilimanjaro? I can assure you after volunteering in its awesome shadow it will definitely be on your mind!

Feedback from our volunteers

Zoe Parry, 20, UK

“I chose to do the internship in Moshi, Kilimanjaro as the opportunity to join a sustainable organization that is passionate about making a difference in African communities was one I could not miss.

The team here in Moshi has been very welcoming and supportive each step of the way but more importantly ensuring that I’m getting everything out of this opportunity that I would like to.

Skill that I have already been developing are:

  • My writing skills – I’m now beginning to have the ability to adjust my writing style depending on who the reader is and what the topic is I am writing about.
  • Confidence – Meeting new people can be very daunting however this internship has allowed me to feel more confident.
  • Organization – Holding fundraising events requires you to be organized therefore my planning and organization skills have improved majorly.

I’m loving every second of my time here in Moshi, I’m faced with challenges at times but with the supportive team I am now a part of nothing is a problem. I feel I’ve grown as a person already and I love the fact I’m part of this amazing organization that is making a positive difference to many people’s lives.”
