How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Langoni old peoples home

Langoni Old People's Home

There are 15 residents in this home many of which do not have family to care for them.

Elderly homes are not common facilities across Africa. As a volunteer you will assist staff caring for disadvantaged and vulnerable elderly people and those with special needs where facilities are majorly under resourced. The need to provide additional care and services to these groups is overwhelming. You will assist by doing physical exercises with the residents to improve mobility and physical health and also by facilitating social activities such as playing games, story-telling, discussions and arts and crafts to improve mental health. You may also be needed to assist in meal preparation, doing laundry and maintenance.

Centre for children and teenagers with special needs

Centre for children and teenagers with special needs

At the BCC centre you will work one-on-one with children on physical activities, motor skill development, arts and crafts. Your volunteer work will also include assisting the kitchen staff to prepare porridge and lunch and helping to feed the children. A vegetable garden is maintained at the centre to provide nutritious meals for the children.

Health clubs in secondary schools

Health Clubs in Secondary Schools

As a volunteer you will teach teenagers in local secondary schools about basic health issues ranging from personal hygiene to malaria and HIV and AIDS. This will also involve activities based on the lessons such as making educational posters for local clinics.

Health clinics

Health Clinics

Your assistance is needed in many areas as you volunteer at under resourced health clinics and help facilitate a Mother Baby group with young women in the local community. Volunteers will research relevant topics and then hold discussions in the Mother- Baby group. You may also be required to lend a helping hand assisting staff in sweeping, mopping, building maintenance and working in the vegetable garden.

Things to do in your spare time

Volunteer Activities

Organised by you, the volunteers, you will enjoy a weekly event night as a group. This may include any games, an obstacle course, quizzes or a movie night. You will also have enough free time to attend different activities in Moshi town such as dance lessons, aerobic classes, trivia nights and visit the many interesting restaurants.

Safari adventures

Safari Adventures

Tanzania is the perfect place to get in touch with nature, from magnificent sunrises and sunsets, vast landscapes and a wealth of wild animal life. From lions to leopards, cheetahs to hippos, wildebeest to waterbucks, warthogs to rhinos, flamingos to monkeys, and ostriches to elephants, there is definitely no shortage of animals to see. You can experience your safari on horseback, in air-balloon or hiking as well as the general jeep safari for those who prefer the comfortable and seemingly safer option.

Kilimanjaro climbs

Kilimanjaro Climbs

Kilimanjaro National Park has become one of Tanzania’s most visited parks, and at the heart of the park is the highest peak in Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro. Being one of the highest volcanoes in the world, weather patterns can be erratic and hard to predict, but overall, the best time to climb the mountain is from late June to October and from late December to February. Embarking on a trip to the top may take some good preparation and acclimatization time. There is however an option for a Day Hike, up to the first base camp only.

Zanzibar island

Zanzibar Island

For some sun, sea and sand take a trip to the tropical paradise island of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania. Zanzibar offers endless opportunities for marvelous snorkeling experiences, forest excursions and sipping cocktails while relaxing to some reggae beats.

About Moshi Tanzania

About moshi tanzania

About the Destination

Mt Kilimanjaro is one of the most iconic attractions in the whole of Africa, the Continent’s highest peak and nestling at its base is the busy tourist town of Moshi; a bustling network of food markets and restaurants, where one can’t escape the ‘catchy’ Swahili music of the locals… and don’t forget the goats who will regularly stop the traffic!

As well as being in awe of the different colours, smells and sounds in Moshi, you can’t help but notice the incredible variety of cultures and specifically that of the Masai people, colourfully dressed in their traditional ‘Warrior’ clothing and brandishing some of the most impressive jewellery. The Masai are gentle people who live very traditional lives and you will get the life-changing opportunity to spend time with these tribes, dancing, drumming, tasting their food and begin to understand the vibrant culture of these unique people.

Living just a short drive away from Moshi, you will spend your time volunteering in the rural village of Mdawi, in an exclusive fully furnished volunteer house with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy nights spent under the stars (and trust me, you’ve never seen so many!) and opportunities for you to interact with and bond with the local villagers.

As well as hosting some of the friendliest and welcoming people in Africa, you can’t come to Tanzania and not experience its other locals… the wildlife. With monkeys in the trees and lizards sunning themselves on the rocks in your garden, living here is a perfect balance between integrating with the Tanzanians and enjoying the spectacular nature the unforgettable country offers. Why not catch the Great Wildebeest Migration at the world-famous Serengeti Park? Or see herd after herd of wild elephants from a hot air balloon drifting along the plains?

If it’s even greater adventures you’re after, how about trekking up Kilimanjaro? I can assure you after volunteering in its awesome shadow it will definitely be on your mind!

Feedback from our volunteers

Nicki Harvey, UK

The best part about the Public Health Project has been building meaningful relationships with the local community - from mothers and babies to children with learning disabilities to school students and older adults. It has enabled us to share information, encourage creative thinking and to raise awareness on important health topics. It has been a positively challenging experience I have truly embraced.

These memories and life lessons will forever be in my heart.

Anna McGillicuddy, USA

I've been profoundly touched by the graciousness and love which is always presented, especially at the Old Folks Home. Though sometimes faced with emotional challenges nothing is more empowering and motivating than knowing we've had some sort of impact on others, whether it be at the beginning, middle or end of their lives.
