How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

The photography program is a 4-week placement (with optional extension) which begins with an intensive induction from our on-site professional photographer. Under his guidance and in the impressive setting of the Greater Kruger Region in South Africa, photographers have the opportunity to enhance their photographic skills, encounter some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife and most importantly, contribute to on-going research, community and environmental initiatives.

LEARNING NEW SKILLS

You will be exposed to:

  • Editing and post-processing software, including training in the use of Lightroom and optional workshops in Photoshop
  • Training in multiple disciplines, including, but not limited to:
    • Wildlife
    • Birding
    • Macro
    • Landscape
    • Astral
    • Experimental (light painting / motion blur / static blur / star trails)
    • Documentary / Reportage
  • Education in the importance of lighting, composition, creativity, shadows and much more in photographs

During the 4-week program, you will practice what you have learnt and develop new techniques that will help you hone your individual talent and style. You will take part in various activities such as Big 5 photographic game drives, sleeping out in our tented Big 5 bush camp, macro opportunities at Kinyonga Reptile Center, shoot landscapes at the natural wonder of Blyde River Canyon and have the opportunity each day to capture stunning sunrises and sunsets on the Dumela Lodge property itself, as well as get involved in the following conservation initiatives:

PHOTOGRAPHERS IN-ACTION

Working alongside our team of researchers, photography volunteers play a huge role in ensuring a constant supply of up-to-date photographs of local wildlife. This is used to populate and update identification databases, which are then sent on to NGO’s and ensure that any data collected by our researchers (e.g. social behavior or migration) is documented and recorded correctly.

Further to this, volunteers will also head out into the bush to contribute to our insect database and on-site ecology study, in which time they are able to practice their macro photography skills.

Supporting local schools ngos

Supporting Local Schools & NGO's

Working with a local school, photographers get the opportunity to use their own photographs to put together a presentation which they then deliver to the local children. Depending on the time of year and curriculum, this presentation addresses topical issues (e.g. drought, poaching, litter, etc.) and provides an educational opportunity for the children to learn.

In addition to providing assistance to schools, volunteers also play an enormous role in supporting local NGO’s. By helping them with imagery for their marketing and website, we aim to raise their profile, generate more donations and improve the quality of life for the communities they work with.

Leaving your impact

LEAVING YOUR IMPACT

Photographers certainly make a huge impact during their time on the project, but this doesn't end when they leave, as their images will continue to promote environmental and conservation awareness on an international scale. By documenting the positive work that is completed by volunteers, communities and our partners each day, this promotes the project, topical issues and raises awareness of the fantastic work done by all, as well as highlighting further work needed.

Last, but certainly not least, photography volunteers leave a lasting impact by contributing to our online database, which is used primarily for worldwide conservation education and secondarily, is a fundraising platform for our charity The Happy Africa Foundation.

Feedback from our volunteers

Grace McLeod, USA

"I gained new friends and a lot of wonderful photographs. I received so much photographic knowledge and experience. All of the photography instruction was great and both professional photographers we worked with are wonderful. I really like that the program allows us to work with more than one photographic instructor to help us form our own style and opinions."

Allanna Skeels, Australia

"I thoroughly enjoyed improving my photography, meeting the other volunteers, experiencing life at the lodge, seeing so many animals, including baby animals after the rains, Jason tracking trips, going to Klaserie, seeing elephants up close.... I could go on and on and on"

Abi Moss-Coomes, UK

"Stepping outside of my comfort zone has given me greater confidence in myself, being immersed in a new environment with new people whilst helping with conservation and in the local community is a great sense of achievement and impact."

Yvette Cherry, USA

"It was a privilege being exposed to the quality of the guides. Their knowledge is amazing. The photography course stretched me daily as I'm a new aspiring photographer. These guys have a strong work ethic, they are driven and motivated to make, as the name implies, an impact. Their programmes are really well planned and so is the organizational day to day living around the lodge. Highly professional."

The lodge will serve as your base for the duration of your time and is also where project activities leave from and take place.

Whether you’re looking for gap-year travel, work experience or simply to volunteer for a good cause, this is an experience that will give you new perspectives, new friends, new skills and give you a glimpse into the beautiful world of the African wild. At weekends our team can help you organise day and over night trips to nearby attractions, including the world-famous Blyde River Canyon.
