How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

The Eastern Cape area in South Africa is one of the poorest provinces in the country and computer literacy is only in its infancy in this region. The Wild Coast Schools & Community Project started a few years ago with 16 broken laptops, four working ones, a dilapidated outbuilding and lots of enthusiasm. Today the project manages around 150 computers in four labs, reaching over 1000 learners with computer literacy, and is involved with six rural schools.

The project has also become increasingly involved in environmental education, partnering with other organisations to support a range of targets from marine and coastal education, water and sanitation, vegetable gardens and playground development.

Education

Education

During your work and volunteer experience you will create teaching and learning aids for both teachers and students. You will plan and develop resources on a day-to-day basis, and deliver computer lessons in the solar powered mobile computer lab.

Sports community activities

Sports & Community Activities

There are plenty of volunteer community projects for you to get involved in on this project. You will be part of the after school sports development initiative as well as provide support to a local Children’s Home of Safety. As this project is entirely dependent on volunteers, further diverse interactions will include art classes once a week and outdoor initiatives such as food gardening support and playground development.

About Chintsa

About chintsa

About the Destination

Chinsta has a laid-back atmosphere with unspoilt white sandy beaches surrounded by lush indigenous forest and thicket, and amazing bird life. It prides itself on being a year-round destination because of its mild, sub-tropical climate.

During your volunteer work you will be staying in shared accommodation (twin rooms), situated in the village of Chintsa East just five minutes from the beach! You will have access to canoes, surf- boards and beach accessories, through project headquarters, and can enjoy plentiful birdlife and a number of both beach and forest walks. During your stay you will be provided with three meals a day and will also be able to experience a truly South African barbeque or ‘braai’.

Volunteering abroad will open your eyes to new cultures and traditions whether you are a student or wanting to do a gap year program. The perfect placement is waiting for you.

Feedback from our volunteers

Sarah Blessington - UK

I was very impressed with the whole set up at the project. I worked on the schools project and thoroughly enjoyed it, and hope that the kids at Chintsa East learned as much from me as I did from them. It was a life enhancing experience which has left me hungry for more. I will be back!
