“Our four legged friends need all the help they can get especially in communities where there is a lack of understanding on how to care for them properly. Seeing them come into the centre neglected and in need of lots of love and watching them transform into happy healthy dogs is a wonderful journey to be a part of.” Michelle Lindsay – Cape Town Business Manager

How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

The shelter cares for approximately 300 animals at any given time, providing them with food, shelter and positive interaction with people. It has an on-site clinic that serves animals from surrounding disadvantaged townships and a mobile clinic that travels daily. In addition the shelter has a Feral Cat Program which traps feral cats found in public places, sterilises them and releases them back into their habitats. While the prime focus is the rescue of domestic animals, the shelter is also rescues terrestrial birds and wild animals. The shelter is pro-life and animals are only euthanised on the advice of a veterinarian, when they are incurably ill, with absolutely no hope of recovery.

Clinics and health care

Clinics and Health Care

If you are a student, this is the perfect opportunity for you to work alongside highly qualified veterinarians and veterinary nursing staff who will be happy to share their knowledge with you. You will be involved in the on-site and mobile clinic applying your skills in animal medicine and assisting with accident victims, sterilisation, de-worming, parasite-control, vaccinations and feeding the animals. If you aren’t studying animal or veterinary science, you’ll still be able to assist on multitude of levels and gain some amazing work experience.

Animal adoption process

Animal Adoption Process

As a volunteer with animals you will assist in the adoption process. Part of the organisation caters for cats; with grooming, care and socialisation processes for kittens, adult cats and cats with feline immunodeficiency virus. The love and care you give the animals improves their prospects of adoption and integration into a loving home.

Animal care education

Feedback from our volunteers

Colleen

"I met so many nice people from all over the world in my volunteer house in Cape Town. They were all passionate about helping others. I volunteered with the Veterinary assistance and abused animal shelter project and it was wonderful! There were so many inspirational people in Cape Town and they have opened my eyes so much.

There were so many things to do in Cape Town, I went shark caged diving, Lions Head mountain hiking, restaurants, and many others with other volunteers from my house. The volunteer house was so nice and welcoming. You will learn a lot in Africa, and I am SO glad I went I say go for the experience because it will be once in lifetime.

I wish I could go back! African Impact is such a wonderful organization and everyone who works for the organization was perfect"

Kaitlin Boling, USA

"Although its been short, my time spent living in Africa has been very eye opening. People from other parts of the world make a lot of generalizations and assumptions about Africa, so it has been really nice to experience a small part of the continent first hand. Being in Cape Town specifically has been wonderful. Everyone here is so nice and friendly. I will take the positivity that I have experienced here back home with me."
