How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Home to just under 2 million people, Khayelitsha is the largest township in Cape Town and where many of our projects are based. Locals live in a vast range of housing from shacks built of wood and iron to larger permanent buildings with limited ablution facilities and communal standpipes for water. Poverty, drugs and lack of education means a need for volunteers and demonstrates the importance of our teaching project.

Volunteers can choose to get involved in the full-time Teaching and Youth Development project, or combine it with:

  • Orphaned and Vulnerable Children project
  • Sports Coaching and Development project
  • Girl Impact Initiative
  • Healthcare
Teaching

Teaching

The focus of the teaching project is to provide disadvantaged children and youth with foundation skills in life and education, working to combat very distressing community issues. As a teaching volunteer you will educate, support, and empower disadvantaged, orphaned and vulnerable youth by assisting teachers with lesson planning, running classes and providing one-on-one attention to students aged 3 - 6 years old and preparing them for primary school. You will also be involved in homework support, craft-making, educational activities and reading clubs in after-school care programs with children aged 5 - 13, which are always very rewarding and give volunteers the opportunity to make a real impact on a child's life.

Emergency care home for abandoned and orphaned children

Part-time Orphaned and Vulnerable Children

The focus of this project is to care for and support abandoned and orphaned children aged between 0 and 14 years, in emergency care homes and after-school care facilities. Your volunteer work will largely be made up of implementing a fun plan of activities at the homes to help the children with their basic development needs, creativity, sociability, gross motor skills, language, numeracy and rhythm. You will plan and implement fun activities with which to achieve these goals and nurture and care for these abandoned children, where one-on-one attention is also essential for these children to develop into adults.

Sports development

Part-time Sports Development

Your involvement as a sports coach will require creating fun games and lesson plans, playing and coaching popular sports such as soccer and hockey and designing drills and fitness tests. You will work alongside a coach to facilitate physical education classes to school children as well as games to help pre-school children improve their gross motor skills and fitness levels during the afternoon. Many of these schools are lacking in outdoor space so creativity and an open mind is essential.

Parttime girl impact initative

Part-time Girl Impact Initiative

Join one of only three of African Impact's Girl Impact Initiatives, giving girls and boys more access to education, health advice, support, mentorship and changing attitudes about gender equality. You will be involved in boys and girls clubs, youth support groups and providing English lessons to improve opportunities for brighter, more informed futures for disadvantaged youths and women in Cape Town.

Parttime healthcare

Part-time Healthcare

A a part-time healthcare volunteer, you will spend some mornings assisting at an Emergency Care Home for Abandoned and Orphaned Children, which was established to care for neglected children aged between 0 and 8 years. On average 60% of the children taken into the home are HIV+, therefore the first stage of the home’s process is to nurse the children back to health. Once the children are medically and emotionally stable, the home will look to recruit a foster carer so the children can be reintroduced into a family environment.  As a volunteer you will assist the home’s carers every Monday and Friday with preparing the medications and vitamins for the children. As and when the children need medical attention, you will also support the health care assistant with appointments at the local clinic or hospital.

Feedback from our volunteers

Ariadna Oropeza, Mexico

"I think that whenever you volunteer for something, you think you'll be the one giving to others. that others will get to learn from you, but at the end I thinks it is you who learns, it is you who receives from these people. Being part of this project has definitely changed my life, as it has made me realize how lucky I am and how much I am still capable of giving to others."

Julia Becker, Brazil

No matter what their (volunteers) expectations are, it will be completely different, because they will meet unique people with unique experiences and that is what will make their experience so valuable.

Greg McQuade, UK

"I have certainly been humbled by how happy, energetic and caring the children at all the projects were, and some must have come from very difficult backgrounds. Seeing people with so little being so warm and welcoming has also forced me reassess certain priorities I held, and this is something I will hold on to."

Lisa Simpson, England

Some people come into our lives and leave hand prints on our heart... and we are never the same. I'm leaving here with hundreds of hand prints on my heart! Thanks for a wonderful time.

In the summer months, from December to February, days are lovely and hot. The winter months of June to August tend to be rather wet but there are some beautiful crisp sunny days in between. Cape Town is a buzzing location for sports tours and festivals such as the Cape Argus Cycle Tour, Two Oceans Marathon, Jazz Music Festival and Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts. There are plenty of local markets to visit, especially on weekends, where you can enjoy mouth-watering home-made fare and shop for local crafts. Visit heritage sites such as Robben Island and maybe even spot whales and dolphins off the coast. The Cape is also ‘wine country’ offering remarkable wine tours and magnificent scenery. Craft breweries are also taking the Cape by storm and there are plenty of places to visit for some unique beer tasting experiences.

As you work and travel in Africa, the people of Cape Town will warm your heart, entertain you and you will discover great diversity in the different communities. Whether you are a student volunteer, coming for a gap year program or a well-seasoned traveller, this volunteer opportunity in Africa promises to leave you a deeper, stronger individual ready for the next adventure.
