How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Photography and editing

Photography and Editing

Be prepared for early starts and to take your photography skills to the next level. While you will primarily focus on wildlife (both big and small), you will also be taking photos of a variety of different subject matters including landscapes, astral photography, people and much more. Through your work on this internship, you will also grow to learn and understand more about South Africa’s captivating animals, their behavior, habitats in the wild and also its people.

Of course, taking that great photo is only half of the work involved. You will spend some of your time editing the best of the photos you have taken and turn them from great photos to that award-winning shot.

Conservation and education

Conservation and Education

Sustainable research and conservation is only possible with the education and inclusion of local people. Working in primary and high schools, you will help us teach conservation education in order to raise awareness. Further to this, you will also get involved in physical conservation activities that help use restore habitats and eco-systems, including clearing encroaching bush or invasive plant species removal.

Mentoring and assignments

Mentoring and Assignments

Throughout your placement, you will be working on a personal assignment that will be agreed upon by you and your mentor. Through constructive and creative sessions, you will outline the goal of this assignment, which could be anything from creating a photographic book or designing your own website, to curating an exhibition of your work. The assignment will be due for the end of your placement, giving you a tangible product that you can be proud of!

Outside of this focal project, you will also meet with your mentor each week to discuss the week’s activities, your highs and lows, and what you have overcome. This will give you the chance to discuss your strengths and weaknesses so we can help you learn what to focus on moving forward.

Presentations and critique sessions

Presentations and Critique Sessions

You will enjoy a myriad of presentations on wildlife, ecology, habitats, and threats they face, while also getting involved in critique sessions. These critiques are designed to allow you to assess others’ work, and by doing so, this will teach you to distance yourself from your own photographs and to analyze them critically, without emotion. Be prepared to be inspired by, and learn from, the work of others!

Things to do in your spare time

Relax

Relax

Back at the lodge after a day’s excitement and hard work, you can relax at the pool, have a drink at the bar, watch a movie or enjoy a games night with other volunteers. Often we have presentations by guides and other staff members giving you an extra opportunity to learn more about the African environment and its inhabitants, both animal and human. Dinner is served in the boma weekly with a nice big fire, often followed by marshmallows! You can also have fun by getting involved in some fundraising events such as games and quiz nights.

Go on weekend trips

Go On Weekend Trips

In your time off (Saturdays and Sundays), you can go on exciting excursions to beautiful locations. You’ll be staying on the doorstep of the Blyde River Canyon and can visit the Kruger National Park, go on a microlight or white river rafting, jump into waterholes while extreme hiking or why not visit another country whilst here and head to Swaziland for the weekend! No matter which you chose you will find lots of amazing photo opportunities!
