How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

With the help of volunteers in Cape Town, African Impact facilitates the only two educational facilities in this community of approximately 1500 residents. The two preschools provide a safe place for children during weekdays when parents and caregivers are working. Unable to formally register as government schools, there is no sustainable financial or resource support available. Health issues are an increasing concern in the community. In partnership with the Happy Africa Foundation, feeding programs have been established, allowing preschools to meet the recommended nutritional intake of nutrients for each child by providing breakfast and lunch. In 2013 our assessments showed a 74% improvement in the number of children aged three years and over who fell into a healthy weight range due to our feeding program.

As part of your work and volunteer experience you will assist in the planning and implementation of arts and crafts, puzzles, games, literacy and one-on-one reading, and homework support.

It is also vital for you as a volunteer doing charity work in Africa, to be a good role model to the children as you interact with them.

At the Children’s Home, you will generally work with children between Grade R and Grade 4. Your role will be to support the children by providing structured individual and small group programs aimed at addressing the areas in which a child may be struggling while also encouraging and emphasizing their strengths.

Feedback from our volunteers

Katarina Utterstrom, Sweden

"When I arrived 8 weeks ago I really had no idea what to expect. I am so glad I decided to take this opportunity to spend two months in Cape Town and being able to take part in the amazing projects run by African Impact. It has been an incredible experience on so many levels, getting to know the children, the staff on projects, other volunteers and the African Impact team.

It has been a learning experience that I will treasure and remember for a long time."

Heena Lad, England

"Two weeks just wasn't enough - I wish I was staying for longer! I've had such a brilliant time and met loads of amazing people whom I'm going to miss terribly, but hope to keep in touch with. Lastly, the reason for being here in the first place - all my lovely children at the Children of Hope. I'm going to miss all the hugs, the crying and fun we had, and hope to see them all again one day."

Carmen Collenberg, Switzerland

"It is a life changing experience and an eye opener in many areas. What we learn here we cannot learn at school or learn by reading a book. It is an experience you have to make yourself in order to understand, learn and take away the best experience."

Anita Jeff, UK

"Incredible, insightful, rewarding, hard work, exceptional, one off, eye opening, beautiful - get to see the many sides of Cape Town."

Rachel Walker, England

"The highlights for me were that l got to help out the teachers with their planning and child assessments to help make the school more sustainable. I really want to come back to Africa again and do more volunteering and I would recommend this project to others.

l have gained more experience of working with teachers and children that come from a different culture and background to me and have gained lifelong skills. This experience has been life changing!"
