How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Stacey

During the community development internship your primary role will be as a representative of the Happy Africa Foundation and you will be responsible for managing the charity’s projects at your chosen location. Projects are varied depending on the country, town, or community that you will be working in.

Projects in both Cape Town and the Greater Kruger Area, South Africa allow you to be immersed in the local culture while experiencing the beauty, wildlife and adventures of the natural surrounds. The rural areas suffer from a lack of government services like education and healthcare, and battle with poverty and the effects of the HIV epidemic.

They are in dire need of medical assistance, HIV education and empowerment for vulnerable populations like youth and pregnant mothers. You will have the opportunity to aid in a number of ways, including fundraising for rural clinics, gardens, preschools and feeding programs as well as overseeing income-generating initiatives such as craft-making.

One of the busiest African Impact programs is located in Livingstone, Zambia, where, as an intern, you will develop skills in liaising with grassroots projects, writing and grant proposals as well as event planning. The diversity of the projects at this location allows involvement in refurbishment projects, work with children and youth as well as medical outreach and awareness.

Other options for an African internship placement is in Jambiani, a rural village on the east coast of Zanzibar Island, and a placement on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The unemployment rates in these areas of Tanzania are is extremely high with most people living at subsistence level. As an intern, you will spend between six and 12 months living at an African Impact project base and will liaise closely with the African Impact Project Manager and be involved in community partnerships and relations.

In addition, you will also be involved directly with the management of donations and the supervision of the implementation of all funds. This will include all financial aspects as well as monitoring, evaluating and reporting on all donations. You will be responsible for raising awareness and fundraising for the Happy Africa Foundation within the local town.

Feedback from our volunteers

Shelley Tomkins, UK

I liked interning with Happy Africa because every day you face a new challenge, something you weren’t used to. Networking with people you wouldn’t come into contact otherwise, getting the opportunity to make the internship your own and work to your own strengths and what you wanted to achieve. Bring a boundless amount of energy with you, stay positive, have patience, and just remember that every little step you take is a step forward. As an intern you learn so much about yourself and who you want to be.

Stacey Addison, UK

This internship exceeded all of my expectations and having given up my job back in the UK after volunteering with African Impact for 3 weeks I could not be more happy or proud of my achievements during this internship. On a day to day basis I managed physical and monetary donations, managed online campaigns, used social media to broadcast the amazing efforts of The Happy Africa Foundation and organized fundraising events in the volunteer house and in the local community involving the local residents of the surrounding town of St Lucia.

I could not recommend this internship enough, if you have always thought of doing something like this then go for it, you will not regret it!

Miriam Willmott, UK

I have worked with some of the most inspiring people in the most inspiring place with THAF! Probably my favourite thing about being an intern with THAF was interacting with the local staff in St Lucia, they taught me a lot and they made me feel really comfortable within the community. I also enjoyed bringing African impact and THAF more into the public eye in St Lucia…it was really nice to make people aware of what we do.

Johanna Sassenrath, Germany

All of the people that surrounded me in Livingstone were really nice, it’s a nice team and in general. The Happy Africa Foundation has so many different projects and is really interesting to see and I really liked the fact that they try to make a difference. I think the internship will make a difference when I go to find a job or go to school because it’s always good to see the world from a different point of view. It will show people that I’m open to different lifestyles and to different opinions.

RiTara Williams, USA

My favorite part of working close to a project [as an intern in the Head Office] was seeing the finished product of your hard work. The smile on the children’s faces and the gratitude received from the communities is enough to get you out of bed in the morning. Waking up in Cape Town every day is the added bonus to this internship. At the risk of sounding biased, Cape Town is the best city in the world!
