How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

As a marketing intern, you will be involved in the day to day operations within African Impact's marketing department and will work closely with the Marketing and Social Media Managers at the head office located on Cape Town’s south peninsula. The office environment is relaxed and friendly and you will enjoy views of the surrounding mountains.

You will be included in office events and team meetings and will contribute to the growth and development of African Impact’s online presence and advertising strategy. Your duties will include updating of online listings and identifying advertising opportunities, running promotions and competitions via website and social media platforms as well as conducting marketing research and compiling reports.

You will assist in creating marketing documents and brochures, do social media content planning, video and photo editing and possibly write blog posts about volunteer projects and source relevant news and articles about the company and partner organisations. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your business marketing skills, expand your network, practice your writing skills and get published! An internship like this also adds immense value to your resume and makes you infinitely more employable in an increasingly competitive job market.

Feedback from our volunteers

Naznin Daya, Canada

I had the most amazing 3 months of my life. I basically got to go back to school for marketing and had the best teachers who taught me so much! Every day I would wake up so happy about going to work and sharing life changing stories to the world. This internship made me realize what I'm truly passionate about!

I loved my job and was challenged to use my creativity differently and to problem solve whenever I wasn't sure how to do something. I got to be me and express myself creatively through graphic design, making videos, etc. AND I got to be a part of probably the most amazing initiative.  Not only did I love my job and my co-workers so much, I got to live in Cape Town!

Every weekend I got to try something new whether that be a Rugby Game, Markets, climbing Table Mountain, etc. I made lifelong friendships with incredible individuals who are giving back on a daily basis. This internship truly changed my life, I gained SO much from it, I grew so much I feel like a new person!

Jack Raffan, UK

The marketing and social media internship with African Impact is certainly not your typical internship. I was not asked to make a single cup of coffee during my time, I did no filing and I only learned how to use the photocopier on my very last day! I think the internship I did with African Impact reflects well on the organisation and its core values.

Nothing that African Impact does is typical or mundane. Its work transcends the ordinary and dances with the giants of awesomeness. I was, from my very first day, given challenging tasks to complete that allowed me to re-evaluate what I thought I was capable of. I was at all times encouraged to suggest new and innovative ways of telling the African Impact story.

Whilst with African Impact I was given the chance to thoroughly explore and develop my creative side which has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for me. I learned a new set of skills that will undoubtedly help me on whatever path I choose for my future.

Holly Tennant, UK

When I started my internship in Cape Town the previous intern told me that by the end of the three months I wouldn't want to leave. To be honest I didn't believe her - but she was right! I loved it. The location was amazing, as was the accommodation and the African Impact staff. And as for the internship itself: I learned so much! Everyone in the office was friendly and helpful, and I really felt like part of the team. I can't recommend it enough!
