How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Research

Research

Join our qualified guides and researchers in search of the Leopard and other predators. Observe the animals in the wild and collect data that feeds into our databases, insuring that vital individual and group records are consistently updated and maintained. Your work will help to identify their movements, behaviours and individual animals in the field, giving us a greater insight into these iconic species, their densities, and their risk factors. All of this information will help mitigate human-wildlife conflict.

Conservation

Conservation

You will assist with physical conservation work by helping us maintain the ecosystems and key ranges of these predators. Your time will be spent on activities like alien invasive plant control, clearing encroaching bush on game reserves and taking part in essential snare sweeps. This work will help ensure that ecosystems are restored to full health and will help the local wildlife to flourish.

Devil in the detail

Devil in the Detail

Your help with data processing and analysis will allow us create reports, ID kits, maps and profiles on the animals we observe. You will learn how to recognise individuals using their fur patterns, scars and whiskers. The data that you collect contributes to the essential research that we carry out, in conjunction with partner organisations, to ensure the long-term protection of these iconic carnivorous species.

Conservation education

Conservation Education

Help with conservation education in our local schools so we can raise environmental and wildlife awareness. By demostrating why predators are important, we can help children understand the need to protect them.

Maintaining vegetable gardens

Maintaining Vegetable Gardens

Working with our partner Eco Children, you will also help maintain the vegetable gardens in local schools which supplement the diets of the local children.

Bush camping

Bush Camping

In Klaserie, a local Big 5 reserve, you will have the chance to monitor the wildlife, record data and simply enjoy all that the bush has to offer. You will be doing night and day drives and have an amazing dinner straight off the fire in our Big 5 bush camp – it’s more ‘glamping’ than camping!

Things to do in your spare time

Relax

Relax

Back at the lodge after a day’s excitement and hard work, you can relax at the pool, have a drink at the bar, watch a movie or enjoy a games night with other volunteers. Often we have presentations by guides and other staff members giving you an extra opportunity to learn more about the African environment and its inhabitants, both animal and human. Dinner is served in the boma weekly with a nice big fire, often followed by marshmallows! You can also have fun by getting involved in some fundraising events such as games and quiz nights.

Get educated

Cultural presentations, achievement presentations, poaching debates, star-gazing and a presentation about our partners and The Happy Africa Foundation could be available for you to attend.

Go on weekend trips

Go On Weekend Trips

In your time off (Saturdays and Sundays), you can go on exciting excursions to beautiful locations. You’ll be staying on the doorstep of the Blyde River Canyon and can visit the Kruger National Park, go on a microlight or white river rafting, jump into waterholes while extreme hiking or why not visit another country whilst here and head to Swaziland for the weekend! No matter which you chose you will find lots of amazing photo opportunities!

Feedback from our volunteers

Keith Mordey, Britain

"I had always thought that I was fairly knowledgeable about Africa and it’s wildlife including the conservation of endangered species. However, the opportunity to talk with experts in the field has broadened my knowledge considerably. I have had a truly remarkable experience on this program that I would happily recommend to anyone at home.

I have gained a considerable amount of knowledge about wildlife and conservation management and it has been a privilege to work with such a positive group of people."

Jennifer Moravec, USA

"I think that the research being completed at this project is worthwhile and I’m excited to have been part of it. All of my research/wildlife experiences have exceeded my expectations."

Haavard Rosenlund, Norway

"My two biggest highlights were definitely seeing the North Pride kill a wildebeest by the road and following the whole process of the hunt. Another highlight was when we followed two leopards mating for 45 minutes. The weekend trips were fantastic and all the people I got to know during my experience. It has influenced me a lot, and basically changed my life.

I am more certain now than ever before what direction I want to take in life. And after getting to know people from all over the world, I now feel the world is more open to me, and travelling in the future will be way easier."
