How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Placement – SAHRC

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is a government-funded organization that is entrusted with monitoring the human rights of South Africans. While South Africa features the world’s most liberal constitution, it is the responsibility of an organization like the SAHRC to ensure that South Africans’ constitutional rights are being protected in practice.

As an intern at SAHRC, you will monitor legislation as it pertains to the interest of the SAHRC by making regular trips to the South African Parliament. You will also have the opportunity to draft policy papers on behalf of the SAHRC (provided that you have earned the trust of the staff). While working as an assistant to the human rights lawyers, you will be responsible for assessing the authenticity of each claim and identify the cases that are worth pursuing in the equality courts. This will involve direct interaction with South Africans who wish to make human rights claims, so it is important that you have prior experience interacting with members of the public in a service role (e.g., customer service, volunteer work).

Placement Spotlight – Scheibert & Associates

Scheibert& Associates, provides professional and comprehensive services in a wide variety of legal fields, including international and local tax and estate planning, private international law, immigration law, criminal law, company and property law, insurance and general litigation and the rendering of advice on all legal matters concerning the corporate and individual client in South Africa and abroad.

As an intern with Scheibert & Associates, you will have the opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of legal fields, which is invaluable experience for anyone studying or considering a career in law. The firm makes use of the latest computer and IT technology and has extensive connections abroad.

Placement – Women’s Legal Centre

The Women’s Legal Centre (WLC) is a non-profit, independently funded law centre established to promote the cause of women’s rights in South Africa. The Centre strives for a vision of women in South Africa, free from violence, empowered to ensure their own reproductive and health rights, free to own their own share of property, having a safe place to stay, and empowered to work in an equal environment.
The WLC does litigation work in the areas of gender-based violence, relationship rights, land and housing, labor and health.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the WLC’s day-to-day work. This may include doing research, meeting with clients, assisting with the writing of affidavits, legal submissions, briefs, and policy papers, as well as attending court cases.

Placement – Natural Justice

Natural Justice is a non-profit organization with three main objectives that align with those of the Convention on Biological Diversity, namely: the conservation of biological diversity; the sustainable use of the environment; and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the use of natural resources. To carry out its aims, the organization works at community, national, and international levels.

During your human rights internship you will work on a range of projects related to the field of environmental law, advocacy, research, and policymaking. Work will be exciting and varied, and will involve hands-on legal work in addition to some fieldwork in local communities. You will gain a good sense of how laws and policies made at the national and international levels have an impact within local communities.

Feedback from our volunteers

Amy Powers

When I boarded the plane for Cape Town following my second year of law school, my mind was racing. Was this the right choice for me? Would I get the legal and professional experience I truly wanted? Would Cape Town be a hard place to live? With all these questions running through my brain, it was amazing how quickly they disappeared as I set foot in Cape Town. Every worry evaporated the minute I saw the city and now I can say, without a doubt, that this trip was the best thing I have done, both professionally and personally.  I truly loved my experience in South Africa. During my internship, I worked for the South African Human Rights Commission as their international research associate. This was an amazing experience as a law student interested in international human rights because it was an opportunity to work for a UN Affiliated National Human Rights Institution. While there, I was able to attend parliamentary hearings, help draft a submission to parliament concerning disability law in SA, and continue research on torture for the yearly report that the commission publishes for the UN. The internship itself was very fulfilling; especially with the wonderful people I was able to work with. I have truly made friends for a lifetime and memories that I will cherish forever.

Iona Wells

I don't think that I've ever quite experienced a month and a half fly by as quickly. I initially signed up for the internship to gain more work. Although I received this, my learning process here extended far beyond the field of my placement to being about travel in general, about myself, about South Africa and about confidence. It was a fantastic opportunity to embrace the novelty of being amongst, initially unfamiliar, people and places, and seize every available moment to explore a fantastic city and meet wonderful people along the way - who have given me a worldwide network of friends who I hope to stay in touch with and see again. I struggle to find a highlight of my trip given that every day was completely different and introduced me to new once-in-a-lifetime ventures and enterprises. Thank you all!
