How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

The Girl Impact

In post-Apartheid South Africa, girls are in real need of support; issues surrounding access to and staying in education, restricted access to healthcare, high abuse rates and a patriarchal system where men hold primary authority all mean that girls are often left behind.

Join an incredibly exciting new initiative for 2016 and one of only three Girl Impact projects across Africa to make a difference in the lives of girls through education, mentorship and support and at the same time combine your experience to get involved in either working with orphans, sports or teaching!

During your time on The Girl Impact, you will get involved in these key areas:

Girls and boys club

Girls' and Boys' Club

We partner with an organisation that provides supported and supervised community-based foster care for orphaned, abused, neglected and vulnerable children through a network of small family homes. Volunteers help to support a girls’ and boys’ club twice a week and focus on topics in the areas of health, safety, early pregnancy, self-confidence and income generation. These topics will help the children make different choices as they go through their adolescence and grow into young adults.

Youth support group

Youth Support Group

Some of the key issues the youth of Cape Town face each day centre on access to education, early pregnancy and a lack of confidence in themselves. African Impact volunteers help us combat some of these issues by providing a support group once a week to a dance group who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, where the youth are able to share their problems. This can be as simple as helping with their homework or having a discussion on what makes a healthy relationship between men and women.

English lessons for women

English Lessons for Women

The English lessons take place in an emergency foster care home which was established to care for abandoned and orphaned children and aims to provide the 'Mamas' who care for the children with the basic tools they need to run the home, speak with potential foster carers and educate the children themselves.

You will also spend some time supporting staff  in their day to day roles at the home. This gives volunteers a greater understanding of the challenges they face each day and will help to shape the language lessons.

Parttime options

Part-Time Options

As well as volunteering on our Girl Impact project, you will also get the opportunity to be involved in some of our wider community initiatives.

Volunteers are able to choose from:

  • Part Time Pre-School Teaching and Youth Development
  • Part Time Orphaned and Vulnerable Child Care

Not sure which one to choose from? Don't worry, we can help you with this along the way!

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Missing

Get to know the neighbourhood

The local town of Observatory, where the volunteer house is based, has a buzzing main street with coffee shops, bars and restaurants just a few minutes away. The house is comfortable and a great social gathering place for volunteers and interns – there is always something on the go. It also provides a relaxing environment should you just wish to unwind with a good book or movie in the evenings.

Go sightseeing

Go Sightseeing

Cape Town has many iconic sites which makes for great photograph opportunities. Take a boat trip to Seal Island, visit the celebrated Robben Island and of stand on top of the world-renowned Table Mountain, reaching it either by foot or cable car. A convenient and fun way to see more of what the city has to offer is to take the Hop-on, Hop-off City Tour bus. You will also have a chance to do some shopping and enjoy fine dining at the V&A Waterfront or at one of the many local food markets

Have a cape town adventure

Have A Cape Town Adventure

You can hike up the magnificent Table Mountain, or take the cable car to the top. Once you’ve soaked in the breath-taking view, you can choose to abseil your way down. Surfing lessons, shark cage diving and sky-diving are also on many tourists’ “bucket lists”, and Cape Town’s mountain ranges make for great mountain-biking too.

Beach and sea adventures

Beach and Sea Adventures

Although the water may be just a little cold, Cape Town has plenty of beautiful beaches to visit, each with its own unique atmosphere. If you are really keen to explore the waters you can dive with the sharks or take a tour to Cape Point Peninsula where you will have a chance to swim with the penguins at Boulders Beach.

Go on safari

Wildlife

Cape Town has something for everyone. If you’re not really a city slicker and prefer to discover what nature has to offer, you can experience an African Safari at Aquila Safari - a “Big 5” private game reserve with animals such as the springbok, lion, cape porcupine, olive baboon, leopard, and African elephant.

The Cape Point at the tip of the Cape Peninsula lies within a nature reserve within the Table Mountain National Park which is a World Heritage Site. Cape Point is a nature enthusiast’s paradise with many buck, baboons, Cape Mountain Zebras, birds and a variety of flora and fauna unique to the area.

Cape Town offers a variety of activities to cater to any traveller. Voted the number one tourist destination in the world, this vibrant city is full of new adventures at every turn and amazing sites to see. Its rich history produces a wide range of people and cultures whose customs and food are a delight. Well-established winelands provide a tranquil contrast to the more contemporary city, as well as plenty of boutique shopping opportunities.

There are plenty of local markets to visit, especially on weekends, where you can enjoy mouth-watering home-made fare and shop for local crafts. Craft breweries are also taking the Cape by storm and there are plenty of places to visit for some unique beer tasting experiences.

As you work and travel in Africa, the people of Cape Town will warm your heart, entertain you and you will discover great diversity in the different communities. Whether you are a student volunteer, coming for a gap year program or a well-seasoned traveller, this volunteer opportunity in Africa promises to leave you a deeper, stronger individual ready for the next adventure.

Feedback from our volunteers

Sophie Spencer, UK

I chose to volunteer in sunny Cape Town with the teaching projects out there. I spent half my time supporting teaching at a pre-school in a local township and the other half with GAPA (Grandmothers Against Poverty & Aids) - a truly incredible project that supports grandmothers to provide after-school care, fun and food to children.

I learnt more than I could have imagined. Cape Town is so vibrant and colourful, it’s constantly buzzing! We spent our weekends and free time exploring Obs (the volunteer house local town) where there is an eclectic mix of late night coffee shops, pubs, clubs and live music! We clambered up Table Mountain and abseiled down again.

We then joined the Cape to Addo tour, where we bungee-jumped, braved black-water tubing and bare-back Ostrich riding! We sunned ourselves at a citrus farm and spotted elephants on Safari – a perfect way to round off an epic South African adventure.

Michelle Hughes, Australia

Two weeks is definitely not long enough and it has flown by. I hope to be back soon and this experience has fuelled my interest and desire to explore this culture rich continent. I’ve had an amazing time and will carry the whole experience, including what I’ve seen and the interactions I’ve had, with me. A big thank you to the whole team for being so warm and welcoming. It’s been a short trip but I’ll be going home with some great memories. With lots of peace, love and hope for the future.

Morgan MacLennan, Canada

The past 4 weeks have been the most amazing adventure of my life! I would never have dreamed it would go by so fast.

Lisa Simpson, England

Some people come into our lives and leave hand prints on our heart... and we are never the same. I'm leaving here with hundreds of hand prints on my heart! Thanks for a wonderful time.

The past 4 weeks have been the most amazing adventure of my life! I would never have dreamed it would go by so fast.

Some people come into our lives and leave hand prints on our heart... and we are never the same. I'm leaving here with hundreds of hand prints on my heart! Thanks for a wonderful time.
