If you have been dreaming about an African adventure holiday with your family but also want to integrate with local communities or assist with vital wildlife conservation efforts, we can help you create the ultimate family volunteering trip!

1305 26 102 evm l

We will work with you to find the perfect itinerary for what you’re looking for, which may range from full-time volunteering to a mixture of tourism activities and tours of the local area. Our expert teams have comprehensive knowledge of the locations we recommend, ensuring we are able to accommodate a mixture of ages and different interests that your family may have, providing a fun, interesting and unique experience.

As soon as you let us know your areas of interest and ages (minimum age is 12 years old), we can then find the right location and volunteering project for your family!

Volunteers are equipped with comprehensive information packs before departure and undergo a full orientation upon arrival at the project – usually by our expert researchers and trained field guides. Safety is one of our highest priorities and our testimonials from previous volunteers speak volumes about the quality of the coordination and the experience we offer. In all our locations we provide secure, comfortable accommodation and access - if needed - to medical treatment and trained first aid providers. With 24/7 support, from arrival at the local airport to departure, our teams are with you to make sure you make the most of your volunteering holiday.

How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Community volunteering

Community Support

Let us know your family interests and we can direct you to the correct location to suit your needs and ideas.  For a start, this could include volunteering in crèches or orphanages, helping to uplift underprivileged communities with building and refurbishments, lending a hand in medical clinics, teaching young children or having some fun interacting in sports programs. Youth groups, reading and art clubs are available for your children to participate in should you want to help with more sensitive topics during your time with us, but rest assured that we can build a schedule to suit you and your family’s needs, whatever your interests.

Wildlife conservation

Wildlife Conservation

Join us in getting up close and personal with Africa’s wildlife, becoming part of a wider team that captures data and records animal behaviors in their natural habitat, while living in the bush and surrounded by nature. Each family member will have a role to play and will leave having learnt so much more about animal behavior and wildlife conservation. There is always room for some practical work, digging waterholes, creating hides and removing alien plants, which means that these programs allow you to immerse yourself in Africa so much more than a traditional safari holiday.

Possible Destinations

We have certain locations that we believe really suit a family group, mostly due to the wonderful mixture of experiences on their doorsteps and offering safe and rewarding volunteering opportunities, with accommodation to suit you and your family. • St Lucia is located in South Africa and is part of a World Heritage Site. This destination is perfect if a beach is high on your list of wishes as it sits on the beautiful warm Indian Ocean and is also a wildlife ‘hotspot’ with endless safari opportunities. The prospect of working in rural village communities with children and entire families living in poverty ensures that there is a wide range of activities on offer in this friendly and welcoming part of South Africa.
  • Victoria Falls is on the border of Zimbabwe and overlooks one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. This location provides the option to interact with and be involved in lion conservation and research, as well as providing education to the local schools that rest on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river. Weekend activities include white water rafting, sunset cruises and lunches in nearby Victoria Falls town.
  • Greater Kruger National Park is iconic in South Africa for its wildlife. If getting up close and personal to the Big 5 while learning research techniques and the importance of the environment is on your agenda, then look no further. Living in a lodge surrounded by wildlife, your family members will learn to understand the importance of wildlife, as well as being part of environmental education programs in the local communities.
  • Kilimanjaro provides an iconic back drop to our community projects in the nearby town of Moshi, amongst the famous Maasai people in Tanzania. Warm and welcoming, volunteers work to provide educational opportunities for local people, while on your doorstep is wildlife safari opportunities and the beautiful Island of Zanzibar only a short trip away.

Feedback from our volunteers

Gilad (11), Tomer (16) Nurit (Mom) and Amos (Dad), Victoria Falls volunteers.

“We arrived in mid-September as a family for two weeks of volunteering in Victoria Falls, one of the most amazing places in Africa and maybe in the whole world.

The Zimbabwean heat welcomed us together with Audrey, the amazing volunteer coordinator. It took us a day or two to get orientated, get to know the other volunteers and the projects we would be involved with. As the days went by we started getting more and more involved both practically and emotionally and no doubt the orphanage was the heart of our experience. We came here almost every day and got to play with the kids, teach them, sing, dance but mainly won a lot of love from the kids, who were of all ages. We saw how much happiness and warmth these kids experience and share.

In the mornings we were involved in a variety of projects - gardening with community members affected by HIV, lion conservation and research and teaching at a local school (which was very different from what we knew back home).

Two weeks went by much quicker than we could ever have imagined. These were two amazing weeks as a family. Days to share, to talk, to feel and to love. Days to try new things we never had an opportunity to try before.

We got the opportunity to meet friends from all around the world, to teach, garden and work with lions, but most of all we fell in love with this amazing community - the kids, the staff and our fellow volunteers.”
