How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Research drives

Research Drives

Join our qualified guides and research team on game drives in search of the Big 5 and more of Africa’s wildlife. Observe and collect data that ensures our vital records are maintained. Using our detailed ID kits, you will identify individuals in the field and monitor their behaviors and movements. You will be recording data using our comprehensive data sheets, which help build our ongoing research database.

Reading club

After School Clubs

You will provide fundamental support in primary schools to help improve basic English and understanding. This extra tuition and focus can help the children successfully progress through their grades and further education. You will work directly with young children in the local schools and with the help of structured learning curriculums, will enhance the learning process through afterschool clubs and homework assistance groups. Here we reinforce topics and approach new ones through fun and play.

Further to this, you will also get the chance to participate in reading clubs, which are a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their English reading and speaking abilities.

Ecogardens conservation education

Eco-Gardens & Conservation Education

A child will struggle to concentrate when hungry and therefore providing a nutritious meal can only enhance their productivity and desire to come to school. We create and maintain vegetable gardens that the children actively take ownership of in order to provide food for the school and the children’s families.

Further to this, we also provide educational opportunities for youth in the communities to learn more about their ecosystems, the Big 5 and how best to conserve them.

Conservation work

Conservation Work

We need your help to create waterholes, remove alien plants, clear fences, conduct snare sweeps and return the land into a habitat for which the wildlife can flourish. Dont worry about your physical ability, we have a role for everyone and many hands are needed.

Dinner is served in the boma weekly with a nice big fire, often followed by marshmallows! You can also have fun by getting involved in some fundraising events such as games and quiz nights.

Get educated

GET EDUCATED

Cultural presentations, achievement presentations, poaching debates, star-gazing and a presentation about our partners and The Happy Africa Foundation could be available for you to attend.

Feedback from our volunteers

Stephanie Schaefer, America

It's changed everything. It has made me want to travel more and come back to Africa. I thought I had my whole life figured out but this showed me that there is so much more that I can do. I've met amazing people from all over the world that I want to see again, and I'm a much more confident, adventurous, and positive person now.

Fiona Geddie, UK

I have really enjoyed my month on this project. I have learnt a lot, done some incredible things and met some amazing people. I have gained a new perspective on different cultures and ways of life and I am really going to miss living and working at this project.

Angelina Farmer, British

I have felt so very grateful to be alive everyday that I have spent here. Admiring the beauty of the environment and wildlife and the love and laughter that I have shared in the community. I have also made some amazing friends from all around the world! Get ready for the most amazing experience of your life and don't forget your torch!

Rebecca Reece, British

I am concerned I may never find anywhere this beautiful again... I couldn't think of a single reason not to come and no words could prepare you for the amazing adventure you are about to embark. You may arrive as a stranger but you will leave as part of the family
