How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

The Enthusiast Series Courses broadens your learning experience by exposing you to diverse landscapes, wildlife and scenarios, training you in a highly-immersive way. We utilize every opportunity to allow you to develop and practice your skills in exciting and enjoyable situations. You’ll be taken under wing by expert guides, who will inspire and mentor you on your journey and prepare you to pass your Enthusiast examination with ease.

Gain an in-depth understanding of the fascinating worlds of arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and mammals; learn safety and basic survival, navigation and tracking skills, and deepen your understanding of subjects including animal behaviour, astronomy, botany, geology, weather, climate and ecology in your Enthusiast course, and further develop your expertise beyond.

What would your typical day look like

What would your typical day look like?

At about 5:30 or 6:00 am (sunrise), you’ll have a quick breakfast, grab a cup of coffee and head out to the bush for a morning of practical lessons or lectures focused on the week’s module, which may be anything from animal behaviour to conservation management. When the midday heat kicks in, you’ll have some free time to relax, study or rest before the afternoon training session. You’ll return to base from your busy day to enjoy dinner and enjoy some down time sitting around the fire sharing the day’s experiences.

Things to do in your spare time

Mica 2

We do allow for some free time in between activities that can be used to relax or catch up on some self-study. Due to the course being only 2 weeks there will be no full days off. We would however highly recommend you add some extra time either before commencement or after completion of your course to your experience and explore the beautiful area. Some examples of attractions in the area:

  • Blyde River Canyon – boat trips, kloofing, white-water rafting, hiking, paintball, hot air ballooning and camping are just some of the activities on offer here.
  • Kruger National Park daytrips/overnight camping available.
  • Panorama Route – Bourke’s Luck potholes, God’s Window and myriad waterfalls are just some of what awaits you – all of which can be done in a day!
  • Debengeni Falls, Tzaneen with picnic area and hiking trails.

About the Destination

We operate from a stunning bush camp, Kaya Imbabala, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, approximately a 30-minute drive from Hoedspruit town.

The camp is made up of 5 deluxe ensuite chalets, with twin as standard (single supplement and double beds available upon request when available) and bathroom with a toilet and shower. The camp operates fully via solar power, embracing eco-tourism approaches, and each of the chalets are built under thatched roofs. The camp is very well located within a stunning scenic part of the reserve. It is within the broader Blue Canyon Game Conservancy, offering an amazing game experience. Birding at Kaya Imbabala is of an exceptional standard, as the birds congregate at the various water pans within the land.

With well thought out bird hide facilities and amazing opportunities to see wildlife including lions, leopards, wild dog, hyena, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and much more, this location truly delivers an exceptional experience for nature enthusiasts.
