How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Today, the Seychelles is known for success in protecting its flora and fauna and has managed to ensure an intact and stable natural environment. It holds a record for the highest percentage of land under natural conservation at nearly 50 percent of the total land area.

Like many fragile island ecosystems, the Seychelles saw the loss of biodiversity during its early history, including the disappearance of most of the giant tortoises, forests and the extinction of certain animal species.

Turtle nesting

Turtle Nesting

Your conservation volunteer work will involve long walks up and down the beach each day looking for turtle tracks and turtles. If any are seen then the site, size, species, nest, carapace and ID markings need to be recorded. Water snorkelling is also necessary to record certain data.

Turtle snorkels

Turtle Snorkels

Volunteer work also includes conducting search patterns for turtles. You will observe and record behaviour of any turtles seen, their gender, species, size, noticeable markings and food types while you swim through the stunning blue sea.

Coco de mer

Coco de Mer

Another amazing volunteer work opportunity is researching the rare and unusual looking Coco de Mer plant or sea coconut, native to the Seychelles. You will record information on the male and female species.

Giant tortoise census

Giant Tortoise census

The Giant Tortoise population is carefully guarded as they are hunted and eggs taken to either eat or sell. You’ll join local rangers to track them and count any new nests and eggs laid.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Beaches

Beaches

The Seychelles provides an array of magnificent beaches to explore. Take a breath-taking hike along the coastline from Beau Vallon to Anse Major where after a couple of hours you’ll be rewarded by a small deserted beach, which is as close to paradise as you’ll ever get.

Aldabra Atoll

This is the world's largest coral atoll enclosing a huge tidal lagoon. SCUBA diver or snorkel here and experience a unique underwater world with the chance of seeing tiger sharks and manta rays.

Land & Water sports

You can enjoy the warm Indian Ocean waters on board a yacht, catamaran or sailboat. You can also windsurf, scuba dive, snorkel and fish in a variety of different locations. Play a beautifully scenic round of golf, go on a horseback ride, bike and hike as you explore a bit of paradise.

Nightlife

The main Islands have some exciting clubs to explore as well as bars and restaurants.

About the Seychelles

About the seychelles

About the Destination

Colourful tropical life abounds below the Indian Ocean waters of the Seychelles. For many people, a holiday here is an opportunity to kick back, relax and enjoy the fantastic food, beaches and culture. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful locations in the world for a volunteer working holiday. Whether it’s part of a gap year program, or a shorter stay, you will discover a piece of paradise.

The Seychelles’ climate is generally warm without hot or cold extremes. The temperature rarely drops below 24°C or rises above 32°C. Life at home base will be simple, island living, sleeping in basic dormitory style accommodation with shared bathrooms as well as shared cooking and cleaning duties. Facilities will be more basic than you are accustomed to so please travel with an open mind and a willingness to adapt to local conditions. Meals are prepared by volunteers on a rotational basis. The weekends are yours to explore and there is plenty to see and do, making this a guaranteed trip of a lifetime.

Feedback from our volunteers

Eilidh Johnston, UK

I gained invaluable field surveying experience which helped to solidify what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. I have applied to university to study Environmental Science and hopefully pursue a career in environmental research.
