Teaching And Orphan Care Home Stay Project, Ghana

Your Role
Orphanages
As a volunteer on this project, you will be assisting at both orphanages and schools. The orphanages are very basic and very under-sourced in both material and human resources. They have very few school supplies, toys, and food. The orphanages vary in size, but some of them house up to 150 children, who range in age from a few weeks to 18 years. As a volunteer, you will contribute to the growth and quality of services provided by the orphanages. You will assist with taking care of the children on a daily basis, which includes preparing food, doing laundry, and organizing educational and fun activities. You might also teach the children lessons on personal hygiene and healthy eating.

After the orphans go to their schools, which is often linked to the orphanage, you will assist in teaching them basic lessons. You can teach mathematics, English, or any other subject you feel comfortable teaching.

Village Schools
In addition to working at orphanages, you will also assist at local schools. Many of the schools in Berekum are very deprived and under-resourced. As a volunteer, you will assist the teachers in their classes, and give the children the individual attention they would otherwise not get. You might also be involved in coaching the kids in different sports. The children will benefit greatly from your involvement!

A Day in the Life
A day on this project may look like this (though please note that this is just an indication, and times and activities will vary day to day):

7.00: You will leave your host family and make your way to the project, either by foot, bus, or taxi
7.30 - 12.00: You may work at an orphanage, where you will get the children ready for school. You may then help teach them in the school that is linked to the orphanage. Alternatively, you might spend the morning at a rural school, where you may help teach the children simple English or maths.
12.00 - 13.00: Lunch break. You might go back to your host family to have lunch there, or you might decide to enjoy a local lunch.
13.00 - 17.00: You will most likely be involved in organizing extra-curricular activities for the children, which can include playing games or sports. You might also help with bathing the children, fetching water, or doing the children's laundry.

School Holidays
Orphanage and village schools in Ghana have holidays breaks during summer, Easter, and Christmas. During these periods, volunteers teach holidays classes, which is very much welcomed by the local communities! The classes are taught in the mornings, and they can be supplemented by activities and lessons in the afternoons. You can teach arts and crafts, music, drama, English and reading, and coach games and sports. If you are enthusiastic in organizing these activities, you will get a lot of excited children joining in!

These are the school holidays in 2011 (though please note they may be subject to change):
December 22 (2010) - January 4
April 14 - May 10
July 18 - September 10

Accommodation
To give you the chance to fully immerse yourself in Ghanaian culture, we will place you with a local host family. Your host family will be extremely welcoming and make you feel like part of the community. Please note that living standards in Ghana are nothing like those in your home country, and accommodation is very basic.
