Optional activities and excursions
Ghana is a land of cultural diversity and contrast. It has a rich cultural history, and unique tourist attractions to offer. Cape Coast is a true cultural and historical town, featuring The Elmina castle, where the slave trade originated hundreds of years ago.
The Kakum Canopy walkway and other ancient buildings also draw many tourists each year.
(These are not included in your volunteering fee, but our coordinators are able to assist you with making the necessary booking arrangements).
Where will I sleep?
You will be staying with nearby well-trained host families who will look after your needs during your time with us. Volunteers are usually placed in groups of 2 – 3 at each host family and on occasion even have the opportunity to stay in the orphanage itself if requests (in your own room). All accommodation has electricity.
And meals?
You will be provided with 3 meals a day and many of the meals will be a chance to experience some local food! Vegetarians can also be catered for.
How do I get there and travel around?
We will meet you at the airport!
Arrive at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra-Ghana, and one of our project representatives will welcome you, and drive you to your accommodation.
What does the cost include?
- Volunteer placement
- All daily transfers to and from tour project during your stay
- Comprehensive orientation program
- Full board and lodging which includes 3 meals a day at the volunteer accommodation
- Support from the Project Coordinators
Project Cost Excludes:
- Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement, which must include cover for repatriation
- All transport by air or bus to the project
- All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
- E-mail / Internet and telephone calls
- Personal
- Laundry (this can however be arranged at a small fee per bundle).
- Soft drinks, wines and spirits
- All visas for border crossings
- Any excursions over-and-above your planned itinerary on this project
Do I need experience, is there orientation?
Volunteers will have a full orientation on their arrival into Ashanti. The orientation will include plenty of information on the project and their role as a volunteer. It will incorporate a lesson on Ghanaian culture and history, as well as an introduction to all the people they will be working with. It will cover everything from health and safety, to do’s and don’ts.
And support?
Throughout your Placement you will have the support and guidance of our experienced project managers. They are part of our support team, which will provide you with competent 24-hour field support and assistance.
What's the age limit?
Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants health.
A day in the life
A typical day in the life of an Orphan Care Project volunteer:
- 7:00 – Rise and shine
- 8:00 – Help the children to brush their teeth and get dressed. Serve breakfast to the children and tidy their beds, teach them about health and hygiene.
- 12:00 - Help with the kiddies lunch – preparing and serving lunch
- 13:00 - Spend the afternoon with the children at the orphanage, play with and give them some one on one attention. Help them to learn some basic conversational English in a fun and playful manner.
- 15:00 Arrange activities such as games, music, drawing, etc. Bring the children back from school and help them with their homework.
- 18:00 Dinner time. Serve dinner to the children and assist in the kitchen and with some general housework.
