Antelope Park Medical and Community Programme Testimonials

Testimonials from Antelope Park Medical And Community Programme in Zimbabwe

William Bruggeman, USA

The best part of the experience was all the wonderful Zimbabweans I met. Everyone was so open about their lives and made me feel very welcome. US medical schools require applicants to have an amount of medical volunteer experience. There could have been a thousand other ways to complete this requirement, however, none of them would have been as enriching as my experience in Zimbabwe.

I feel the clinic gave me the opportunity to have a hands-on medical experience. I know the experience will make me a better Doctor!

“I feel like I have the best of both worlds. I get to live at Antelope Park and interact with the animals as well as go out in the community and learn about the people , their culture , and their struggles. The first week at Mkoba polyclinic, I was in the maternity ward. While there I was able to witness the labour and delivery of several babies which was an amazing experience . I was also involved in working with the new mothers and their babies as well as the pregnant women.

The clinic has little in the way of resources and medical supplies. There is often no electricity or running water. But the staff make the most of what they have and provide the best care possible considering the dire conditions. As a volunteer I am able to see and do so many things that I would never have the opportunity to do in my own country.

My experience so far has proven to be very rewarding and fulfilling. When the clinic is slow the nurses, midwives and I spend time learning about each other’s cultures and different practices which I find very interesting. In exchanging ideas we are able to learn so much from each other. I also spent an afternoon at the local pre-school and an afternoon working with abused children, walking into the pre-school and seeing 80 smiling faces is somewhat over-whelming but also wonderful. Even though the resources and supplies are limited the children are happy and love to learn.”
