Optional activities and excursions
These are not included in your volunteering fee, but our coordinators are able to assist you with making the necessary booking arrangements.
Nightlife: Cape Town is home to some of South Africa’s most vibrant nightlife, catering for a variety of tastes and interests. Camps Bay and Clifton offer some great, beach-side bars and restaurants from which to enjoy a ‘sundowner’ while watching often spectacular sunsets. Long Street in the centre of Cape Town is known for its eclectic mix of entertainment, from live bands, to a variety of clubs, pubs and restaurants; there is a place suitable for every traveler, whether you’re looking for a trendy hang-out, a more laid back evening or a something with a more sophisticated feel. If you’re still looking for more, there is also Greenpoint, Claremont, the Waterfront and Grand West Casino to make many a memorable night!
Victorian & Alfred Waterfront: situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town's working harbour, the V&A Waterfront has become South Africa's most visited destination. Set against a backdrop of magnificent sea and mountain views, exciting shopping and entertainment venues are intermingled with imaginative office locations, world-class hotels and luxury apartments in the residential marina.
Table Mountain: where the Cableway will take you to the summit in under 10 minutes and the cable car's rotating floor will ensure that you get a 360 degree aerial view of the city.
Two Oceans Aquarium: showcases life from the mighty Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Over 3,000 living animals can be seen in this marine kaleidoscope including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins. This is where the two oceans meet!
District Six Museum: District Six was named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867. This intriguing museum gives a background of the fascinating history of this community, from its once vibrant atmosphere to the forced 'resettlement' of its residents. After being declared a 'whites only' area under the Group Areas Act, its people were removed by force and their houses flattened by bulldozers. The District Six Museum, established in December 1994, works with the memories of these experiences and with the history of forced removals more generally.
Spier Wine Estate, Cheetah Outreach and dinner at Moyo Restaurant: Spier Wine Estate, near Stellenbosch, is one of the most famous sites in the Cape Winelands. Set amidst stunning scenery, it is also home to two wildlife awareness projects, the Cheetah Outreach and Eagle Encounter. These will allow you a close and personal interaction with one of Africa's most beautiful cats, the cheetah! Enjoy a feast under the African starlit sky at Moyo. Amidst bonfires and traditional African music, you will be treated to an intricate fusion of African flavours, sights and sounds.
