How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

To ensure continuity and consistency, you will be placed on one local project for your entire stay in Kenya. This increases the long-term impact of your work, establishes strong relationships and allows you to gauge those who have special needs and extra help.

Education enhancement

Education Enhancement

Assist the teacher develop new teaching material by combining your ideas such as songs, games and activities with the teacher’s classroom knowledge. Help those children who lag behind to catch up by making learning fun. Implement stimulating ideas in learning, aimed at promoting active participation and an in-depth understanding of schoolwork and not merely learning through repetition.

Group work revision

Group Work & Revision

It’s easy for children to fall behind in their schoolwork when the classes are too large. Your volunteer opportunities may include taking groups of children out of the classroom environment to go through the classwork at a slower rate and with more guidance and one-on-one attention. African Impact volunteers can take part in revision activities after class and during break times to help children understand their schoolwork.

Reading club

Reading Club

During reading clubs run in the afternoons you’ll get to assist small groups of children with their reading and literacy skills outside the formal classroom environment.

Holiday program

Holiday Program

Holiday clubs provide a safe environment for children to spend the holiday period and also provide a valuable time for students to catch up on learning. Holiday clubs are fairly unstructured and you can choose to work with individual children or small groups.

Green club

Green Club

The Green Club raises much needed awareness about taking responsibility for one’s hygiene and the environment. This is mostly due to the fact that these underprivileged children lack the most basic refuse and sanitation services as well as adequate personal hygiene opportunities. You will work with teachers to incorporate personal and environmental hygiene awareness and plan age-appropriate life-skills workshops.

Arts and sport activities

Arts and sport activities

Volunteering in Kenya means that you will be involved in developing creative activities for physical education, music, drama, poetry, drawing and painting.  Add value by stimulating child development and have lots of fun at the same time.

Feedback from our volunteers

Aparna Singhal, Canada

African Impact was a fabulous way for my friend and I to start our trip. Not only were we touched by the friendliness of the local people, but were moved by their strength, courage, and love of life! While we may have started the trip believing that we were coming to help the local people, I truly believe that in the end they helped us in ways that cannot be expressed in words! I will never forget the wonderful memories shared as we worked with staff and children It was an unforgettable, eye-opening, and heart-warming lifetime experience! Kenya is a truly beautiful country filled with vibrant, lively, and amazing people. It was a trip of a lifetime!

Hardeep Mann, Denmark

I think it has changed pretty much all my perspectives in life. But it has been a real eye opener to see how and what it means to be in the midst of poverty and actually experiencing to be with these people, and hearing and observing what issues and consequences poverty has. I am definitely feeling lucky living in Denmark and this whole experience has made me appreciate and value even the smallest thing!

Merel, Netherlands

The last few weeks I have been in the teaching project in Limuru. African Impact was a great support and I had a very special time at Hope School. I will take this experience with me for the rest of my life. Thanks for making it happen African Impact!

Sam Brodie, UK

It was a brilliant experience it really changed my life, the way the project is run is amazing, the way people look after you is brilliant. Everything is amazing about this project, I couldn’t say anything negative because theres nothing to say.

Maddie Triay, Spain

I think I have seen and experienced a lot of things that I would never have seen or done back home, it has been a very intense month in which I have seen or learnt something new every day and it will be an experience that stays with me for the rest of my life.
