How your Volunteer Fee is Used:

Volunteer tourism, or ‘voluntourism’ as it is popularly known, is loosely defined as a holiday in which you give back to the land you are visiting; contributing to either community development or conservation. But it’s so much more than that. Voluntourism encompasses a new trend of responsible tourism, where travelers are making informed and responsible choices and planning trips which don’t negatively affect the country or communities they are visiting. When volunteering, it is critical that travelers choose a volunteer organisation or charity with a proven ethos and philosophy around sustainable and responsible tourism practices. This applies both to their work with local communities, wildlife and our volunteers themselves.

African Impact is proud to have a 10 year track record of facilitating responsible volunteer programs in Africa, providing 24 hour support and guidance for volunteers and offering on-going support to communities in need. Understandably, these operations cost money to run and this is where the volunteer fee comes in.

Work & Impacts

Kihara hospital

Kihara Hospital

Kihara Hospital is a public hospital providing care in the Kiambaa Sub County and offers a range of outpatient services, including HIV and TB testing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, family planning and a dental unit. Inpatient departments include male, female and children’s wards and also a large maternity ward that supports approximately 150 births per month. There is a theatre for surgeries such as caesareans, as well as an x-ray department. Depending on the volunteers’ qualifications and level of experience they have, they will either have the opportunity to observe and learn in all areas across the hospital or assist (under supervision) in certain departments.

Pcea kikuyu mission hospital

PCEA Kikuyu Mission Hospital

This is a large, general hospital that offers medical care to the community, regardless of whether they can afford their treatment or not. Doctors attend to around 350 patients a day and there are a variety of departments where you can be placed as a volunteer, including the maternity ward, orthopaedics, the HIV and diabetic clinic, nursing and emergency care. This hospital is also particularly well-known for its specialized eye unit.

Karuri hospital solely for qualified healthcare practitioners

Karuri Hospital – Solely for qualified healthcare practitioners

Karuri is a small, government hospital with an outpatient unit, dental unit, maturnity unit and a small lab. You will learn about these units during your time volunteering, as well as assisting healthcare workers and presenting workshops for staff or patients.

Public health centres

Public Health Centres

There are a host of opportunities to gain observational experience, share knowledge with local qualified health professionals and learn about providing care with limited resources during your time at the public health centres. You will be able to experience various departments including the laboratory, maternity, paediatric and child-care units, comprehensive care clinic (HIV & TB patients), counselling, orthopaedics, administration, outpatient care and the pharmacy.

Orphanages preschools in limuru

Orphanages & Pre-schools in Limuru

Depending on the assistance required from the community, you may be involved in teaching, running workshops or providing general support at local orphanages or pre-schools, many of which are home to vulnerable children who are developmentally delayed.

As a volunteer, you will help teach the children various art and sport activities that make creative use of their time and hone their hidden skills and talents. You will assist with general care, including cooking the children's meals, offering moral support and guidance to the children, provide training in basic life skills and also be involved in general maintenance - where needed - to expand and improve the facilities.

Things to do in your spare time

Volunteer Activities

Volunteer event nights happen weekly on a Thursday, where you can participate with fellow volunteers in quiz nights, watch movies or enjoy a barbecue. There are basketball, tennis, and volleyball facilities, as well as some great nature trails near the volunteer house, so there is always plenty to keep you busy in your free time!

Local Activities

You can take convenient day trips into Nairobi (Kenya’s capital city) to do some shopping, experience the local city culture, visit an elephant orphanage, stop by at a giraffe sanctuary or enjoy some of the best restaurants in East Africa.

Wildlife

Wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle migrate from the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania to the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya every year during July to October. Experiencing this ‘Great Migration’ of thousands of animals either by game vehicle or hot air balloon is a sight of a lifetime!

All members of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) are found in the Masai Mara Reserve and make for an unforgettable African safari experience.

Beach

Kenya’s beautiful coast is certainly a hidden treasure, providing surfing, snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and other water sports.

Great Rift Valley

The Great Rift Valley is a highlight of any trip to Kenya. With remarkable scenery, volcanoes along it's lengths and many great lakes, there is an array of wildlife to explore on foot, horseback or in a game drive vehicle.

About the Destination

Kenya is a beautiful and diverse country, with much for a visitor to experience. It's home to world-class safari parks that are second to none and offer diverse and abundant game viewing opportunities, as well as warm and welcoming local communities.

As a volunteer, you will be based in the communities surrounding Limuru, located in central Kenya and just 30 miles from Nairobi. A high altitude destination, Limuru stands at 7200 feet above sea level and the climate is warm and temperate, with significant rainfall all year round.

The accommodation is based in a lovely, green, secure and scenic compound. You will be living in a basic (but comfortable!) cottage on the grounds of the Brackenhurst Lodge – an area with breathtaking surroundings.  Enjoy recreational activities such as volleyball, tennis, walking trails or just taking in the magnificent view.  The house has running water, hot showers and flushing toilets.

Whether you are a student or healthcare professional, your presence and volunteer work is much-needed and your smile and extra pair of hands will have a bigger impact than you could ever imagine.

Feedback from our volunteers

Carly Matte, Canada

"I would definitely recommend African Impact to others who are looking to volunteer. The staff are wonderful, the accommodation was excellent and I felt that I made a difference here."

Jill Armour, Australia

"I can definitely say that my decision to volunteer with African Impact was the best thing I have ever decided to do. It was rewarding and I was constantly learning about the people and their lives here. I also met some amazing people, volunteers, coordinators and staff of African Impact who I have loved spending time with and hope to keep in contact with in the future. I think this project has given me the perfect opportunity to see what life is really like in Kenya while still being able to see the sights on the weekends and enjoy the company of other volunteers."

Rebecca Hammersley, UK

"The biggest impact this project has made on me has been on my medical perspective. I think the programs that African Impact offer have provided great insight into healthcare in the 3rd world and the experience has been invaluable."

Veronique Venne, Canadian

"African Impact is the only one I will recommend to friends and family…and I will book through this organization for my next volunteer trip!"

Morgan Harbick, USA

"Living in Africa for a short period of time has changed my perspective in so many ways. I am so appreciative of the opportunities I have back home. Kenyans have also taught me that material things don't make you happy, it’s the love and support of your community that make you happy. Some highlights of the time I spent in Kenya was working with the children at the school and getting to assist in maternity at Tigoni hospital; I would recommend African Impact to anyone."
